A POWER FOR GOOD
W. J. White Succeeds Grant.
John M. Grant. Sheriff-elect for
Polk county, tendered his resignation
as Marshal of Dallas at the city
council meeting, Monday evening,
The resignation was accepted, and
William J. White was elected to fill
the vacancy by a unanimous vote of
the council. The new Marshal is a
prudent, level-headed citizen, and it is
believed that he will prove to be an
efficient officer. Oscar Hayter was re
elected City Attorney for another year,
William Picket Dead.
William Pickel, an aged resident of
Umatilla county, died of paralysis at
the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clara
Turner, near Echo. Saturday. He
was for many years a resident of
Yamhill county, and for a time made
his home in Dallas with his daughter,
Mrs. M. D. Ellis. He left several
sons and daughters, all grown. He
was pleasant, kindly old gentleman,
and enjoyed the respect of all who
knew him.
Returns trom Mexico.
W. W. Smith, formerly a resident
of the Eola hills district, and well
known throughout Marion and Polk
county, but who now lives at Wash
tucna, Wash., has recently returned
from a trip to Old Mexico, and is now
visiting in and around Salem. He
says that after having visited Mexico
and other southern countries, he is
content to spend the remainder of his
days in Oregon or Washington.

cals for the technical instruction and
information of mechanics, artisans,
manufacturers, engineers, and all
others whose work requires technical
knowledge-of all persons upon whom
depends the industrial progress of the
city.
5. It is of incalculable benefit to
the city by affording to thousands the
highest and purest entertainment, and
thus lessening crime and disorder.
6. It makes the city a more desir
able place of residence, and thus
retains the best citizens and attracts
others of the same character.
7. More than any other agency, it
elevates the general standard of
intelligence throughout the great
body of the community, upon which
its material prosperity, as well as its
moral and political well-being, must
depend.
Finally, the public library includes
potentially all other means of social
amelioration . . . A library is a living
organism, having within itself the
capacity of infinite growth and repro
duction. It may found a dozen
museums and ' hospitals, kindle the
train of thought that produces benefi
cent inventions, and inspire to noble
deeds of every kind, all the while
imparting intelligence and inculcat
ing industry, thrift, morality, public
spirit, and all those qualities that
constitute the wealth and well-being

William Faull, appraisers of the
Lindly M. Murray estate, filed their
inventory and appraisement in the
Probate Court, Wednesday. Judge
Coad ordered that the administrator
pay to the guardian of Lindly Thorn
ton Murray, the minor heir to the
estate, the sum of $6,919.65.
Enjoyable Lodge Event.
The Rebekahs of McCoy assisted
the Rebekahs of Amity in initiating
soveral members last Tuesday evening,
the McCoy Rebekahs putting on the
work. Refreshments were served after
the business of the evening was
finished', and a social visit was also
enjoyed by the members of both

A union Sunday school picnic will

Passing of Bert VanCleve.
Bert VanCleve, a native of Albany,
and well known as an actor and news
paper man, died at North Yakima,
Wash., this week after a short illness.
He recently returned from California.
His father is a resident of Toledo.
Deceased leaves a widow and two
children. Bert made quite a record iu
the theatrical business a few years
ago, when he bought out Margarita
Fischer, the emotional actress, who
has often played in this city. Albany

High Mark at Corvaliis.
The enrollment lor the past yeai at
the Oregon Agricultural College has
readied the highest point iu the his
tory of the institution. It is 735,
against 680 last year, an increase iu
attendance of 55. In the enrollment,
there are students from 14 states
besides Oregon, one from Eng'and
and five from India. Polk county
furnished 29 students to the Agricul
tural College.

Nevada, and Washington Territory," as extend
ed to all the Public Laud Slates by act of August
4, INfc!, Joseph C. Allen, of Portland, county of
Multnomah, stale of Oregon, has this day tiled in
this olhce his sworn statement No. (1S1 1, for tlie
purchase, of the South one-half of S. W. of
Section No. s in Township No. 7 South, Range
No. 0 West, and will oiler proof to show that tlie
,and sought is more valuable for its timber or
stone than for agricultural purposes, and to
establish his claim to said land before the
Register and Receiver at Portland. Oregon,
on Thursday, the 'Jlst day of June, 1900.
