Polk County Observer J. C. HAYTER, KDITOR AND PUBU8HER. Published Weekly at 1.60 per Year. Strictly In Advance. DALLAS, OREGON, FEBRUARY 2J.1905. The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. Ttio Mitchell machino is having troubles of its own these days, aDd great indignation is expressed against certaio anti-machine Senators who enlisted the aid of Democrats in knocking out the machine program In the upper house of the Oregon Legislature. Really, it is too bad that the machine's plans were so com pletely upset, but why should these Mitchellites make such wry faces when they are forced to take a dose of their own medicine? Who started this "combination" game in Oregon? How did the machine get into power in Multnomah county? Isn't it a well known fact that the Simon faction was defeated by a combination of Mitchell Republicans and Democrats, and that, even with this strong combi nation, the Mitchellites won only by a scratch? How was the defeat of Donald Mackay and Wallace Mc Camant and other stalwart Republi cans accomplished? How did Alex Sweek, Bob Inman, Pierce Mays et al get into the State Senate? Who elected "Citizen" Hunt and Andrew C. Smith to the State Senate? The gang that did this work, finding their machine about to go to pieces, are now frantically appealing to all Re publicans to be "loyal to the Grand Old Party." This is all well enough, but where was thoir "loyalty" four years ago? Where was their loyalty at any time when the political fortunes of their leader, John H. Mitchell, were at stake? Talk about enlisting the "aid of Democrats!" Has John II. Mitchell ever been elected to the United States Senate without the aid of Dem ocrats since 1872? And what prices have been paid for this aid! Every schoolboy knows that had it not been for combinations with Democrats in various counties, the present machine organization in Oregon would not be in power today. Now, that their own style of warfare is being waged against them in certain quarters, they are highly outraged in feeling and aro appealing loudly to "party loyalty" in an endeavor to escape from their awkward situation. The clays of the machine are numbered, and it la well for the state and for the Republican party that such is the caso. No reconciliation of the warring factions can be brought about until tho present "rule or ruin" methods are wiped out of existence. The men who originated this policy got into power by tho aid of Democrats, and aro now getting only a little taste of thoir own medicine. Hut all this factional warfare is deplorablo, and the OnsEitvER hopes to see the day when the Republicans of Oregon shall find it possible to settle their differ ences, elect their officers, and carry out their measures without permitting their political enemies to take any part in the proceedings. These aro very grave charges that you have brought against prominent Government oilicials. You declare the racts justify them. I waut to sav to you now that if, in view of what has transpired, you fail to make your charges stick and allow the Govern ment's caso to fail, you will place the Government in a very bad light. In running down these frauds you have represented the United States Govern ment, and it would bo a grave thing to make such serious charges and be unable to substantiate them. Presi dent Roosevelt to Secretary Hitchcock and Attoruey-Oeneral Moody. All of which is equivalent to saying that if tho prosecution of the Oregon land fraud cases is being carried on merely for personal revenge and the Government fails to "make good," some high official heads will drop in the basket. Tho President is in ear nest, and will uot tolerate auything that savors of persecution for political purposes. 1 mimhar nt pltfwna Of the IiUCkia- .n ,,tn rn..r H!ufl'ifr IllPt. No formal meeting was held. independence esi oiue. If Judtre Coad was criticised for his failure to attend the meeting, as the West Side claims, the men who toon part iu the meeting were certainly un informed of the reason for his absence. Had they known that Judge Coad was hovering between life and death with a serious attack of pneumonia, they would have been more "backward" in their criticisms. The Independence naner makes no explanation of tlie cause of the Judge's absence, and it is altogether probable that none of these parties have heard of his illness. All of which goes to prove that much of the criticism of public officers, so freely indulged in nowadays, is pre mature, undeserved and uncalled for. Jill Humors Arc impure matters which the skin, liver, kidneys and other organs can not take care of without help, there is such an accumulation of them. They litter tho whole system. Pimples, boils, eczema and other cruptious, loss of appetite, that tired feeling, bilious turns, flu of indiges tion, dull headaches aiid many other troubles are due to them. Hood's Sarsaparilla and Pills Remove til humors, overcome all their effects, strengthen, toua and Invigorate the whole system. "I bad salt rbeum on my bands so that I could not work. I took Hood's Sarsaparilla and it drove out the humor. I continued Its use till the sores disappeared." Mns. Ik O. r.uuwN, Kuiuford Kails, Xia, Hood's Sarsaparilla prom'sc3 to cur and kpa trt promts. At a joint meeting of the standing committees of the Anti-Saloon League and the State Prohibition Alliance of Oregon, held in Portland, Monday night, it was unanimously decided that the policy would be to advise against calling any elections under the local option law in June of the present year in counties, cities and precincts, save where elections are be ing held tor other purposes. G. L. Tufts, superintendent of the League, in a signed statement in a Portland paper, says that the League will favor au initiative amendment at the next state election providing for strictly- precinct local option. Some malicious person has been de stroying property and tampering with the water conduit leading from Canyon creek to the city reservoir. The latest offense reported is the theft of the lock on the intake box at the head of the line. This is a grave matter and every effort will be made to apprehend the guilty person. Dallas depends upon this water sup ply for her protection against fire.and the value of the system depends upon its being kept in readiness for any emergency. If further destruction of this property occurs, no expense will be spared in bringing tho guilty per son, or persons to justice. MARGUERITE FOY flarvelous Demonstrations and riys tic Manifestations. Marguerite Foy, who comes to the Dallas City Hall, on Friday, March 3, for two nights, is conceded to be the greatest Mystic Marvel of the age. Her marvelous materializations have completely baffled scientists every where. All her manifestations are done in the open liglit and in full view of every person in the audience.chairs moviug, bells ringing, musicplaying, with Miss Foy's hands tied behind her back and sealed, also head and feet tied. The management wishes to announce that this performance is no fake, but clean and refined. rionty of fun and amusement, in fact, an evening's entertainment that is not only amusing, but scientific and educational. Miss Foy is assisted by Dr. George W. Payne the wizard of the mind. This is a practical demon stration of the power of the mind over subject matter, which is also a scien tiflc demonstration, iu fact, a science that is used by our most eminent pro fessional men. Come and enjoy an evening of fun and amusement. Re served seats on sale at the usual place Will Build Large Warehouse. Dallas is to have a new warehouse suited to the needs of a rapidly grow ing town and important shipping point. The new building will be erected by W. L. Soehren on the site of tho old Southern Pacific warehouse, directly across the street from Mrs. May Farley's residence property. Work on the structure will begin as soon as tho old warehouse is torn down or moved away, and the owner expects to have the building ready for use inside of the next CO days. The warehouse will be 40 by 100 feet in size, two stories in height, and will have a floor capacity of 6000 square feet The heavy frame work will be covered by sheet iron, which will re duce the danger of damago by fire to the minimum. Dallas has long needed a first-class warehouse, and the erec tion of tho new building will result in bringing to this city the trade of many farmers who have been going elsewhere to store their farm products.
