A NOXIOUS WEED
Kills Every Other Object in the Na
ture of Competing Vegetation.
For a number of yeurs the hills sur
rounding Eola have been covered with
u weed, usually growing to bp two feet
or more in height, with a yellow blos-
Hom at this time of the year, but be
coming brown and very stiff after los
ing its flower. The proper name of
this remarkable pest is St. Johnswort,
and it came to Eola several years ago
in a crate of crockery shipped to a
merchant of that place from Germany,
so it is said, in the shape of a few
seeds, and the result is with us.
At present theie are thousands of
acres of land in Oregon which are
rendered practically worthless by the
presence of this importod weed. It is
one of the worst pests known, since it
grows more especially in pastures and
on land which is not cultivable. It
will first appear in a small patch,
most people not knowing what it is,
and if let alone will rapidly spread,
never stopping until it has killed out
every other object in the nature of
com pet i 1 1 g vegetation .
For several years this weed has been
spreading over the pasture of Mr.
Mush in the southern part of the city
and it has this year obtained a for
tnidable start in Wilson's Avenue.
The Park Commissioners are taking
steps toward its extermination but it is
also growing on tho streets in that
vicinity and should receive the atten
tion of the city authorities.
Every lot owner in Salem should
look for the first appearance of the St.
Johnswort plant on his premises as it
is'a matter where a stitch in time will
prove a great saving. It may be
found in various parts of the Willam
ette valley and portions of Douglas
county where it has subdued large
tracts of pasture land. Forest rangers
have found it growing in tho Cascade
mountains where campers have carried
the seeds. In many respects it is a
worse pest than the Canada this-le.
No stock will eat it, not even a goat.
It should be watched, especially in its

HOP PRICES ARE LOOKING UP
Stocks In Brewers' Hands Are Lower
Than They Have Ever Been
Before.
Indications at the present time,
according to the opinion of J. R. Linn,
of tho hop linn of Catlin & Linn, are
that the 1U04 hop market will open
with the price not lower than 20 cents,
and probably better. Mr. Linn re
ports, as does also Joseph Harris, a
local hop buyer who lias just returned
from tho East, that stocks in brewers'
hands are lower than they have ever
been before, and unless something
unforeseen happens in tho meantime
there is likely to be some lively
scrambling to cover on the part of the
hon sollers. as well as tho brewers. "
Ono man in Salem places the 1!)04
yield for Oregon at not more than 65,000
bales, where there were over 1)0,000 last
year, and an increase of 3000 acres
this year over last, but the consensus
of opinion among local hop dealers is
that tho yield will not bo less than
80,000 bales.
Mr. Linn says that on account of a
cold and late Spring the yield in New
York State will be somewhat light,
and the conditions are much the
same in California and Washington,
which will have a tendency to cut the
supply down materially this year, and
tho effect of this is quite apparent.

BRIGHT'S DISEASE.
The largest sum ever paid for a pre
scription, changed hands in San Fran
cisco, August 30, 1901. The transfer in
volved in coin and stock ,f 1 12,!i00,00 and
was paid by a party of business men foi
a specific for Uright'a Disease and Dia
betes, hitherto incurable diseases.
They commenced the serious investi
gation of the specific Nov. 15, 1000.
They interviewed scores of the cured
and tried it out on its merits by putting
over three dozen cases on the treatment
and watching them. They also got phy
sicians to inline chronic, incurable cases,
and administered it with the physicians
lor judges. Up to Aug. 25. cighty-scyeii
per cent of the test cases were either
well or progressing favorably.
There being but thirteen per cent of
failures, the parties were satisfied and
closed the transaction. The proceedings
of the investigating committee and the
clinical reports of the test cases were
published ami will oe mailed free on ap
