east end of town. Mr. and Mrs. Chase
Will move to Monmouth, where their
son is engaged in the jewelry business.

The only charge preferred against
Bert Turner at the preliminary hear
ing in Corvallis, Tuesday evening,
was for carrying a concealed weapon.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney E. R.
Bryson says that the evidence that
Turner assisted or encouraged Keady
in the shooting of either Dunn or
Osburn is not forthcoming. Turner
was sentenced to 50 days in the county
ail and $10 fine.
District Attorney J. N. Hart was
elected chairman of the Republican
County Central Committee at the
meeting of the committee held in the
courthouse last Saturday afternoon.
He was authorized to select a secre
tary. Mr. Hart has been severely ill
for the past two weeks, and is not yet
able to leave his room. His illness is
in the nature of lagrippe, and it was
feared for a time that he was threat
ened with pneumonia.
Fifteen people went to Monmouth
last Fiiday night and attended the
piano recital given by Mrs. Beatrice
Barlow-Dierke in the Normal chapel.
All returned home delighted with the
concert, declaring that no such play
ing has ever been heard in Polk county
before. The program was made up
strictly of selections from the great
masters, but was rendered in such a
manner as to be pleasing throughout.
Mrs. Dierke easily holds a place
among the foremost living pianists,
and President Ressler is to be con
gratulated for bringing such an
artiste to Polk county.

John C. Uglow arrived home from
San Francisco Friday noon. He in
forms us that he selected a stock of
goods' for his new clothing store in
Dallas that will surpass any similar
line ever brought to Polk county. Mr.
Uglow spent a week in the Bay City
studying the latest 'styles in men's
wearing apparel before placing his
orders, and will open a stock that will
represent the cream of all that is new
in San Francisco and the East.
Mrs. Hester Glenn, whose husband
died in Elma, Wash., April 10, arrived
in Dallas with her little son and
daughter this week, and will make
her home with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. W. H. Reid. Mr. Glenn died of
lagrippe, after an illness lasting only
few days. He was a painter by
trade, and was a quiet, industrious
man. He lived in Dallas last Summer,
and had many friends here.
Walter Williams, the confectioner,
has made arrangements to handle
F. V. Brown's line of high-grade con
fections. In order to properly display
this line, he will place in the front of
his store, facing the street, a hand
some five-foot glass case, the finest
and best street case in Dallas. It will
accommodate ten trays, and each tray
will be filled with a different con
fection, such as vanilla, strawberry,
lemon, walnut, molasses taffy, pure
cream penocha, stand cream caramels,
'York" and "Spa" log cabins, peanut
brittle, etc. Mr. Williams will be
fully stocked about Saturday noon
and ready to serve his many customers

The Bryan-Lucas Lumber Company
gave all their men tickets for the
chicken dinner at the Christian church
last Saturday. The kindness was
greatly appreciated.
The report of the Falls City public
school for the month ending April 22
is as follows : number enrolled, 132 ;
average daily attendance,127 ; tardies,
vistors, 27: neither absent nor
tardy, 76.
The little folks of the Junior League
of the Methodist Church have planted
flower-beds in the church yard and
intend to care for them that they may
be able to supply the church with
flowers every Sunday.

The bazaar and chicken dinner in the
Christian church last Saturday was a
great success. The ladies cleared
$87.85 above expenses. This will pay
the debt on the church basement and
leave a neat sum in the treasury.
The base ball game on last Satur
day afternoon between the teams of
the Falls City and Dallas public
schools, resulted in a victory for Falls
City, the score being 22 to 9. Ben
Beezley officiated as umpire.
Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Seymour enter
tained the eighth grade public school
class on Friday evening. Those
present were: Bessie Milne, Cora
Page, Mabel Stoddard, Alma Husely,
Irene Dodd, Belle Wolfe, Willie
Montgomery, Oscar Ellis and Ealph
Harrington.
The Odd Fellows celebrated the 85th
anniversary of the order by listening
to a lecture on "Fraternalism," bv
SchaeJ Superintendent-Jairge Den-
man, of Benton county. The talk was
interesting and instructive. A ban
quet was served at the Falls City
hotel.
C. L. Hubbard, of Dallas, has a
crew of five men making barrel staves
on the Ira Mehrling place. The staves
are hauled to the railroad, just east
of town, and shipped direct to Portland
Mr. Hubbard says this timber is the
best he has ever worked.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Morrison, of
Heppner, are visiting in Dallas.
A large audience at the courthouse
on Tuesday evening enjoyed a rare
treat when Ilev. E. L. Tiffany, M. D.
of Eochester, N. Y. presented the
economic side of the prohibition ques
tion. His address was unique, his
thought along new lines and his logic
invulnerable.
A meeting of the Polk County
Teachers' Association will be held in
Monmouth tomorrow. Superintendent
C. L. Starr has arranged an excellent
program for the meeting, and all
teachers should attend. D. A. Grout,
principal of the Park school in Port
land, will take part in the meeting.

Three Toes Cut Off.
Lloyd Simpkins, the 7-year-old son
of Fred Simpkins, of Hopewell, was
run over by a rolling harrow on last
Monday, aud three of the toes of one
foot cut off. Lloyd was riding with
his father on the disc harrow, and
slipped from his position, fulling in
front of th moving discs. The team
being driven was gentle, and was
stopped without effort, else the knives
might have passed over his body.

New Candy Factory.
Frank V. Brown is preparing to
open a first-class candy factory in
Dallas, and, as soon as the new build
ing on his residence lot is completed,
will put in machinery for manu
facturing nearly everything in the
confectionery line. He will sell to
the trade only. The products of the
factory will be handled in Dallas by
Walter WTilliams and Marks & Dunn.
He will also supply a grocery line to
the grocery stores. Mr. Brown in
forms us that since he began manu
facturing home-made candies heie
about a year ago, the sale of hi goods
from one store alone has been over
one-half ton per month.
