FLY A N D T i l t
STATESM AN.
Oneo upon a Tim e, u. u State« man
«'iu writing out a great »pooch on the
Tariff Question, a Fly began buzzing
about bin lu-ail and face in a Must An
noying Manner, and this was kept up
so long that the Stateamiiu finally lost
his patience and indulged in some Forci
ble Language.
“ Ah! but who would believe that a
Great Man like you would bo putout by
a Little Insect like me!” sneered the
fly.
“ It's your smallness that so Provokes
me,” replied the Statesman. “ If you
were an Ox or a Horse I would suffer
no Ridicule by losing my Temper and
D riving you Away. Lot me give way
and Fight a Fly and everybody wo^Jd
laugh at me.”

The question having arisen: “ Why
do W e Kat?" the Parrot Challenged tho
Owl to a Discussion and left the Decis
ion to tho Serpent Tho Parrot went
back several thousand years to Prove
that Adam Ate and was obliged to Kat,
and that all Mon who came after him
had been Obliged to oat, and usod up
the best part of two hours in drawing
comparisons. Making Deductions and
Clinching his Points. When ho finally
sat down wet with Perspiration, but
Fluttered by his own Arguments, the
Serpent asked the Owl to begin.
“ Gentlemen,” said the bird, as he
slowly arose, " I have only a word to
nay. It is my opinion that wo Eat be
cause wo were built that way. ”
The Serpent promptly Decided that
tho Owl hud the best of it, and when
tho Parrot raised a howl over It the
Fox chucked him under tho wing and
said:
“ blab is a good thing, but brevity
and Common Sense most always hit a
Jury.”

Mirrors were old-fashioned in tho
time of Moses, and deem I by him of
sufficient importance to bo j 'iced in the
Ark. Job also mentions then, and calls
them looking-glasses a term a htch is
applied to them throughout the sacred
text—yet it seems clear that the} -vero
made not of glass, but of metal, as v re
all mirrors for many ceutiS ios sube. -
quently. brass is spoken of as one of
tho metals of which they were made,
but ltJj more likely that the liest khM
w .c - t o .p o s e d of silver or somo oth™
winraMUal capable of receiving a high
'a*liny, speaking of tho extrava
g a n c e »? tho lloman ladles, mentions
that their mirrors wore of silver, add
ing, ¿tomewhat sarcastically, that often
only u thin surface of the precious
metal was used, a statement which is
borne jut by discoveries made during
recent excavations. These ancient mir
rors were of small size, and of various
and curious shajies. I ’lino is also re
sponsible forthe statement that mirrors
wore sometimes formed out of rubies,
and mentions one made from an einor-
erald, wherein Nero used to wutch tho
fights in tho amphitheatre.
The credit of first making glass mir
rors can not with accuracy bo given to
any one in particular. Tho Sidonians
are rtqtorted to have Invented glass,
but even if they attempted—as it is said
they did—to manufacture mirrors from
it, its inferior quality would not have
given so high a reflective power as somo
of tho better kinds of metals; and at
whatever period they were first made
it was not until the thirteenth century
that they became generally known, and
much later before they entirely dis
placed tho metal ones. A t first molten
load was jxmrod over the lead to form
a reflecting surf:u:o, but that method
was soon exchanged for a piece of white
metal foil fixed at tho back, and in the
latter part of tho fifteenth conturv an
amalgam similar to that now usod was
substituted.
With improvements in
tho manufacture of glass camo corre
sponding improvements in mirrors.
They were made ‘larger, and with a
truer Burfaco, and have now reached a
state approaching perfection. — Notea
and Queries.
