The other char- acters’ struggles, like “anger,” “stress,” and “body image,” are written on pieces of tape on their backpacks. “I feel like it gives off more of a message to people. There’s, like, no script in- volved, because then every- body has their own viewpoint on that, rather than us just saying it,” said Jasmine Gon- zalez, who helped planning and production on the video. The class hopes teens will take away the message that anyone can experience de- pression and hopeless- ness — even people with a lot of friends or academic and athletic successes. “Honestly, everybody can be in a situation, even if it doesn’t look like it,” Gonza- lez said. “As much as it looked like the Popular Girl was laughing and having a good time, it’s not always like that behind closed doors.” Powe r Pe e r s t e a c h e r Roseanna Larson said Cen- tral High School staff started the class three years ago to allow students to have a more direct effect on chang- ing the school’s environ- ment for the better. “It’s a leadership class based on building positive culture at the high school,” she said. “It’s not a class where you have to run for an office or anything.” Larson said she’s proud of the work her students have done with the video and other projects they have taken on. “It’s so amazing to watch the growth that these stu- dents make,” she said. Gouge agrees, saying he’s impressed with the group’s commitment to making the video and the mission be- hind it. “I feel like this project al- lowed the youth to speak to other youth in a way that we, as adults, could never have done,” Gouge said. Many of the students in- volved in the production know someone who has at- tempted or thought about suicide. They say that social media may be partially to blame for the increase in the numbers of their peers who consider suicide. Miguel Rodriguez, who worked on production, said bullying is more acceptable now. “Nowadays, people think it’s a good thing to bully people and take their anger out on someone (else),” Ro- driguez said. Class members said many of those bullies hide behind anonymity provided by some social media apps. Ro- driguez said he cautions other teens that seeing what other people say on social media can be hurtful. “It gets really personal,” he said. Leon said the class through its campaign, wants to offer a different perspec- tive, one that encourages people to seek help if they are struggling. Falls city’s graduation rate for 2015-16 is 77.8 percent, up from 50 percent the previous two years. That is higher than state and similar district aver- ages. The district’s dropout rate in 2015-16 is 3.4 percent, down from 4.3 percent. More than 95 percent of freshmen were on track to graduate. Tests scores for Falls city stu- dents are down at all levels in both English and math, and are below averages for state and similar districts. Less than 95 percent of students were as- sessed in the 2016-17, a state standard for participation. Perrydale’s graduation rate is 96.4 percent, higher the state average and like district gradu- ation rates. Freshman on track to gradu- ate of 86.4 is better than both comparisons. Juniors at Perrydale per- formed better on English tests, but scores fell for elementary and middle school grades. Mid- dle school students performed below the state average by more than 10 percentage points, but other grades per- formed better. Math scores were lower at all grade levels and below state and similar district performance. Report cards will contain dif- ferent information next year as the state unveils a new report card.
