Polk County News Polk County Itemizer-observer • September 20, 2017 5A Total eclipse inspires engagement Dallas school board By Jolene Guzman The Itemizer-observer MONMOUTH — Jacob Timshel had a romantic vi- sion in mind for how he would propose to his girl- friend, Crystal Pace, when the time was right. It’s safe to say Crystal one- upped him during a visit to Mo n m o u t h d u r i n g t h e weekend of the Great Amer- ican Eclipse on Aug. 21. Timshel and Pace, who live in Portland, were visiting his grandmother’s business, Labyrinth Gardens, in Mon- mouth, to help organize the garden’s Black Moon Party during the eclipse. “We were down there for a total of four days,” Timshel said. He told Pace he wanted to watch the eclipse from the center of the labyrinth, so they ventured into the maze to find their spot to view the once-in-a-lifetime event. Totality was just seconds away when Pace asked Timshel a question. “She said ‘Jacob, can you do me a favor?’” “Yes, but can it wait until after the eclipse?” he re- sponded. Her next words — just at the beginning of totality — were: “Can you marry me?” “It completely caught me JoannE TImSHEl/for the Itemizer-observer Crystal Pace and Jacob Timshel got engaged during the Great American Eclipse on Aug. 21. off guard,” Timshel said. “I said yes.” Pace had not intended to go into the labyrinth with a boyfriend and emerge with a fiancé, but the moment — the eclipse — inspired her, Timshel said. He said that they had talked briefly about mar- riage, and having been to- gether for four years, Pace was already a part of his family. “I thought we would wait at least another year,” Timshel said. “I was thinking about saving for an engage- ment ring.” His plan for a proposal was to go back to the begin- ning of their relationship. “Our first date was at a park, so I thought we should return to the place of the first date,” he said. He doesn’t feel cheated of that opportunity, though. “It seemed like the perfect time,” he said, “life-defining in more than one way.” The couple are planning to be married in September 2018. And yes, he does remem- ber plenty about the eclipse. He remembers the bell his grandmother rang at totality and the opportunity to look at the eclipse without glass- es for a few minutes. “Being in the path of to- tality, we could look right at it,” he said. “That won’t hap- pen in again in Oregon in my lifetime.” He said his family was “ever-joyed” to hear of the couple’s engagement. His grandmother Joanne Timshel confirmed that. “We were all delighted, because we like her a lot,” Joanne said. approves contracts By Jolene Guzman The Itemizer-observer DallaS — The Dallas S c h o o l B o a rd a p p rove d three-year contracts with its teachers and classified em- ployee unions on Sept. 11. The contracts with Dallas Education association (certi- fied teachers) and the Dallas chapter of oregon School Employees association (clas- sified) are effective from July 1 through June 30, 2020. Both employee groups have salary increases in each of the three years of con- tracts. For teachers, the in- creases are 2.5 percent in 2017-18, 3 percent in 2018- 19, and 3.5 percent in 2019- 2020. Classified staff negotiat- ed with the district increases of 3 percent (2017-18), 3.25 percent (2018-19) and 3.5 percent (2019-2020). In other business: Debbie maclean, the district’s busi- ness manager, said the 2016- 17 school year will have less carry-over funding than origi- nally thought. She said the initial “ending fund balance” projection was at $1.9 million. maclean said the final num- ber will be about $300,000 lower, at about $1.6 million. She said the reduction is a combination of about $200,000 less revenue and $100,000 in higher-than-pro- jected expenses, mostly in salary. about $60,000 in lower revenue affects the special education program, new op- tions, for sixth through 12th grade. maclean said there may be more minor changes. “We still have a few recon- ciliations to do, but we are very close to being final,” she said. “looking at the current year, we are on track.” The board denied a com- plaint filed against an em- ployee at a special meeting on Sept. 5. The board also directed Su- perintendent michelle John- stone to arrange for Break- through Coach training for herself, her administrative secretary, all building princi- pals and their administrative secretaries, and members of the board. The Breakthrough Coach program is geared toward school administrators and de- signed to help them become more efficient and effective leaders, according to the pro- gram’s website. The complaint was dis- cussed in closed session under oregon Revised Statute 192.660 (2)(b), which states: “To consider the dis- missal or disciplining of, or to hear complaints or charges brought against, a public offi- cer, employee, staff member or individual agent who does not request an open hearing.” P OLK C OUNTY W ORSHIP D IRECTORY DALLAS Bahá’í Faith - "Building a Better World."
