PRESERVING HISTORY Heritage auto, ag show celebrates industry By emily Mentzer The Itemizer-Observer MONMOUTH — The an- nual Heritage Auto and Ag Show returns to downtown Monmouth on Saturday, fol- lowed by an old-fashioned tractor pull on Sunday. “The whole show is dedi- cated to preserving our auto and ag heritage and those who made it,” said Paul Pfnister, one of the or- ganizers of the event. “One of the highlight vehicles is a 1907 Haulsman, extremely rare, there’s just a few of them left.” The Haulsman doesn’t have a steering wheel, Pfnister said. “You have to steer it with a tiller, and it rides on buggy wheels,” he said. “It’s incredible to look at. The people who have the car are the third owners. It was in the same family for 70 years.” SPEAK OUT ONLINE Rainfall during Sept. — 0.67 in. Rain through Sept. 18 — 34.12 in. Every time they hike or visit a park, they take a bag with them to pick up and properly throw away what others have discarded. On Sept. 9, they joined their fellow citizens for Falls City’s Solve Little Luckiamute Cleanup, part of the city’s Arbor Day Celebration. Volunteers with white plastic Solve bags and gloves spread out along the river picking up trash. “Lilly didn’t know there was such a thing because we al- ways do it,” Bellemore said, adding she’s always taught her kids and grandkids to leave nature as they found it. “Every little bit helps.” Mayor Terry Ungricht said more than 35 volunteers turned out for the cleanup, a lot more than in past years. “They just kept showing up,” he said. “I almost didn’t know where to send them.” He estimated that 1,500 pounds of trash was picked up during the four-hour event. “It was a real success,” he said. Except for discovering a few scary-looking spiders, Lilly enjoyed her time cleaning up the city. “It’s fun and it helps the community,” she said. Bellemore smiled and added: “Yep, it makes everything prettier, huh?” JOLENE GUZMAN/Itemizer-Observer Melanie Bellemore searches through brush near the falls on the little luckiamute river on Sept. 9.
