Polk County News Polk County Itemizer-Observer • September 6, 2017 5A Kid: Trinity learns to trust cops Baskett: Wetlands drained Continued from Page 1A “He was a nice person,” Trinity said. Sarah said she was sad- dened to see her daughter’s fear of law enforcement and grateful for Watson’s atten- tiveness to Trinity. “I don’t think any child should be afraid to go to the police if they need help,” she said. “My grandmother was a member of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office back in the ’70s, and she really liked what she did. I’m very proud of the fact that she served her community, and I want the kids to have the same respect for that, and to understand that these are people we can go to if we need help.” Sarah wrote a letter to the Sheriff Mark Garton, thank- ing Watson for his kindness and for helping replace her daughter’s fear with trust. “Experiences we’ve had before with police officers in the town that the kids are from weren’t always posi- t i v e,” s h e s a i d . “ T h e y wouldn’t wave the kids off or were rude in any way, they just weren’t warm. They weren’t ver y ap- proachable. Deputy Watson, he smiled .and it was a gen- uine smile.” The sheriff’s office posted the letter on Facebook on Aug. 24, along with photos Continued from Page 1A Refuge employees are try- ing to eradicate it early, which requires draining the wetlands, including those beloved by local birders and hikers. “We have six main man- aged wetlands at the refuge,” Evans-Peters said. “The three lowest ones are dry.” Employees are using her- bicides to kill the primrose before it gets a foothold at Baskett Slough. According to the ODA, water primrose is an invasive wetland plant, with floating stems and bright yellow flowers. Once it takes root, it “forms dense mats of plant material on the water sur- face. Mats displace native plants, interfering with wildlife and reducing recre- ational activities. … Decay- ing plant material can cause rapid sedimentation and lower oxygen levels, killing fish.” It’s widespread in the three counties surrounding Polk County and has limited distribution in Polk. Evans-Peters said the plant originates from South Ameri- ca and may have been intro- duced in Oregon through “aquarium dumping” in area wetlands, lakes and rivers. People also use it as an orna- mental plant in water gar- dens, according to ODA. Evans-Peters said he un- derstands regular visitors’ disappointment in not see- ing Baskett’s normal wet- lands and their feathered in- habitants this year, but rec- ommends that they visit wetlands on the northern part of the slough that haven’t been drained. He said the battle with the plant may continue for some time to make sure the inva- sive plant is fully removed. “I suspect we will have to treat this will again plant next year, but hopefully have water next year or the year after,” he said. Kubista, herself, skipped breakfast Tuesday. Even though she’d seen many first days of school, this was her first day of school as a new superintendent, and she was excited. She spent the summer helping get ready for this day — sitting with teachers, students, staff and commu- nity members, listening to their concerns and learn- ing. ACES was Kubista’s first stop, with plans to spend time at all of Central’s schools throughout the day. Though it’s been a while since she was in elementary school, she said her favorite thing about school was the fresh start. “Every time I walked through the doors, it’s an- other year,” she said. “I re- member walking to my classroom to see what friends I have in my class- room. I’m an identical twin, so I knew I’d have my sis- ter.” Kubista JOLENE GUZMAN/Itemizer-Observer Trinity Markel overcame her fear of law enforcement of- ficers and talked to Deputy Marty Watson. of Watson and Trinity’s sec- ond visit — during which he gave her eclipse glasses and let her run the siren on his patrol car. Watson said he’s been overwhelmed with the re- sponse. “It’s great, but I wasn’t pre- pared for that, so much kudos being handed to me while there’s a flood going on, the storm, and the huge fire in Brookings. Every available firefighter in the state is down there,” he said. “If there is a hero in this whole thing, I think it’s the mom. She’s ob- viously doing the right things with her kids.” Continued from Page 1A Kirby started his first day of second grade Tuesday. He said he was most excited about “learning new stuff.” In the cafeteria, students grabbed breakfast — some with their parents — before the first bell rang. Kylie Johnson, starting fifth grade, told Kubista that she was looking forward to reading. She was already on the third book in the Repli- ca series, which has 24 books in total.
