PREP FOOTBALL Panthers roll in opener Defense, special teams help spark Central’s victory By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer INDEPENDENCE — Sen- ior Isaiah Abraham was itch- ing to get on the field Friday night. The wide receiver/defen- sive back missed much of the 2016 season due to injuries, but he was ready to contribute to Central’s Abraham football team. And contribute he did. Abraham had one receiv- ing touchdown on offense and two interceptions, in- cluding one returned for a touchdown, on defense, helping the Panthers to a 35- 6 win over Bend on Friday night. “It was just great to be LUKAS EGGEN/Itemizer-Observer Central’s defense held Bend to six points on Friday night. back on the field again and play football,” Abraham said. “We’re a brotherhood this year. We play for each other.” PREP FOOTBALL Wolves fall to 0-2 Pirates outlast Mapleton By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer MONMOUTH — Western Oregon women’s soccer coach Steve Ancheta knows WOU is a work in progress. The Wolves opened the sea- son by falling to Biola 3-2 in double overtime on Thursday and San Francisco State 3-0 on Saturday. “We have a young team,” Ancheta said. “We have 11 new players added and lost nine seniors from last year. I thought the two opponents we saw are very talented and very athletic. With San Fran- cisco State, I’m thinking they can be a playoff team. They have some nice talent out there. They were great games for us to play and it was a learning environment for us.” See WOLVES, Page 13A DALLAS — Cross Creek’s men’s club results for Aug. 29: Two man best ball Gross: 1, Bob Bennett- Ted Bennett, 35; 2, Paul Dis- ney-Bill Karjala, 36; 3, Jim Schroeder-Bob Sprinkle, 37. Classen “This was our first true test to see how the girls w e r e going to mesh as a team,” coach Savage Shana Lavier s a i d . “They played a lot of volley- ball, and e v e n though Van Well t h e y were exhausted by the time the championship game came around, they showed tremendous tenacity.” Stats were not available, but Lavier said several players stepped up in a big way. “Emma (Classen) and Maggie (Blair) played all the way around all day and were just solid and consistent,” Lavier said. “Tristin (Savage) had a great tournament, not only hitting, but was able to frustrate a lot of teams with her blocking. She shut down hitters real quick. Hailey (VanWell), even though she is only a sophomore, she was an offensive threat.” See DALLAS, Page 12A By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer PERRYDALE — Almost from the opening snap, one thing was clear during Per- rydale’s football game against Mapleton. This was going to be one exciting game. “It was a battle, for sure,” senior Cooper Butler said. “We were going blow for blow on offense.” The Pirates and Sailors traded leads six times be- fore Perrydale secured a 52- 42 victory on Thursday. Butler scored three touchdowns, including a 61-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 50- yard touchdown run in the third quarter. “Cooper was running like a man possessed,” coach Steve Mabry said. “He’s our saving grace a little bit. If we need 3 yards, we’re going to give him the ball.” See PIRATES, Page 12A Soccer LUKAS EGGEN/Itemizer-Observer Western Oregon defender Kaitlin Poe attempts to ad- vance the ball up the field on Saturday afternoon. • Western Oregon’s soc- cer team will play at Hawaii Pacific on Friday and at Chaminade on Sunday.
