Polk County Itemizer-Observer • August 9, 2017 7A Polk County News Photo: Be ready to adjust telephoto lenses Continued from Page 1A “Practice taking off the filter and putting the filter back on,” Lowery said. “But not while looking at the sun.” Lowery also stated that those using long, telepho- to lenses should keep in mind that they will have to reposition to follow the sun as the earth rotates. Using a stronger lens will result in needing to reposi- tion more times than a lesser lens would require. It should be noted that, while everyone can take a photo of the eclipse with any camera, some photos will turn out more detailed and clear than others de- pending on the kind of camera being used. “It’s going to be very dif- ficult for anyone with a point-and-shoot camera to take pictures of the eclipse,” said Lowery. “They’ll probably be able to see the stages but they’re not going to get cool stuff like solar flares and stuff like that. They don’t have enough settings … plus, for a point-and- shoot camera, to focus on the sun is kind of difficult.” Regardless of how you plan on capturing the memory of the eclipse, the photos will be unlike any other. The last solar eclipse over Polk County was in Feb. 1979, so it’s certainly worth grabbing even a quick photo to remember this uncommon event. For more advanced pho- tographers who are famil- iar and comfortable pro- graming their camera, here are Lowery’s sugges- tions for shooting the eclipse with a solar filter on: • Shutter speed: 1/1250 • ISO: 400 • Aperture: f/11 Fire: Don’t try to put out fires alone Continued from Page 1A Temperatures are ex- pected to head back into the 90s, with the first day of the Polk County Fair on Thursday forecast in the high 80s. A high-pressure system settling over the Pacific Northwest is what caused the heat wave, Bishop said. “This high-pressure sys- tem is slowly moving out of our area, which is one reason we’re seeing a slight dip in forecasted high temperatures,” he said. “That does not mean there is not another sys- tem that will be the same, worse, or significantly weaker.” The summer has a long way to go to top the driest streak the Willamette Val- ley has seen. Right now, the record stands at 71 days without measurable rain, Bishop said. The Salem area, where Polk County’s records are kept, has gone 53 days without measurable rain. “By measurable rain we mean at least 0.01 inch- es,” Bishop said. “The last time you guys got rain was June 16.” With showers in the seven-day forecast, the chance to beat the 71-day dry streak is not likely, but a little precipitation won’t reduce the fire hazard much, Welsh said. “When we do finally get some rain and cool down, we still want to remind people to be vigilant about fire danger,” she said. Light rain “won’t take us out of any kind of burn ban or high warn- ing.” Fire season typically lasts through October, Welsh said. “We’re still being pre- cautious,” she said. “Please don’t burn. Don’t drive on unimproved roads and in fields.” Welsh said people have tried to put out their own fires with garden hoses, but said she would rather people dial 911 right away to keep themselves, others and property out of harms way. “I know that they mean well, but we don’t want them to get hurt or put their home in danger or themselves in danger — or anyone else,” she said. “We have more equip- ment. We have more water.” As for the smoky haze that has lingered in the area, that has been mainly from fires in British Co- lumbia, Canada, Bishop said, as well as the White- water Fire near Mount Jef- ferson. OBITUARIES Continued from 6A Betty Pyeatt Feb. 8, 1933 – June 23, 2017 Betty was born in Dallas on Feb. 8, 1933, to Walter and A l p h a Craven. She had two youn- ger broth- ers, Bob, of Dallas, and Joe, of The Dalles. She grew up there and graduated from Dallas High School in 1951. She married Herschel Greenwade in 1953, and they had three children, Melanie, Sally, and Justin. They bought a small farm outside of the Monmouth/Indepen- dence area and raised their family in the beautiful Willamette Valley. Betty opened an antique store on the farm, and called it The Old Granary and loved it. She always had a big gar- den and enjoyed working in it. She had a big heart and enjoyed all the animals the kids raised. In 1983, she married Jim Pyeatt, and they moved to a beautiful small ranch on the Lostine River in Wallowa County. They opened a li- censed outfitter and guide service called the JP Pack Sta- tion. She loved the Wallowa Mountains and enjoyed cooking for the people at their camps and the trail rides with them. She later worked for David Manuel, a nationally known sculptor in Joseph, and in 1997, they re- tired and bought a house in the Wickenburg, Ariz., area. Betty passed away at Sa- cred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Wash., on Friday, June 23, 2017. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. We will always remember your beautiful smile. Her wishes were that no services would be held, and that her ashes be spread in the Wallowa Mountains with her husband Jim’s. Kent Crawford July 5, 1950 – Aug. 4, 2017 Private family service.
