Polk County Education Polk County Itemizer-Observer • June 14, 2017 17A CLASS OF 2017 ACADEMIC HONORS Polk students to graduate from OSU on Saturday NAOMI CRUICKSHANK/ for the Itemizer-Observer Perrydale High School celebrated its seniors during a graduation ceremony Saturday. CORVALLIS — Oregon State University will hold its 148th commencement on Saturday at Reser Stadium on the Corvallis campus. The commencement speaker is Hüsnü M. Özyeğin, who headed to Oregon State Universi- ty in 1963 with only $100 in his pocket and graduated to become a highly successful busi- ness leader and philanthropist in Turkey and throughout Europe. OSU is one of the few large universities in the nation to hand out students’ actual diplo- mas during the commencement ceremony. Commencement is free and open to the public; no tickets are necessary. Erin Worley will attend Western Oregon University and major in secondary education with a focus in English literature. Her career goal is to be a high school English teacher. Rylie Gaither-Lyell will also attend Western Oregon University, where she will major in commu- nity health and nursing with a minor in human biology. Her career goal is to be a certified nurse. The Harpy Bovard Scholarship is in honor of Frank “Harpy” Bovard, who joined the fire depart- ment in 1941. He served as the caretaker of the Dallas fire station and the equipment. He also served as the Volunteer Firefighter Association’s Sergeant at Arms for more than two decades. When he died, he left the Dallas fire department $35,000 in his will. Each recipient of the scholar- ship receives $1,000 toward his or her college expenses.
