By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer LEBANON — Moments after finishing the boys 300- meter hurdles race at the Mid-Willamette Conference District Track and Field Championships on Saturday, Dallas senior Jacob Deming threw his hands in the air. His first thought? “(Got) another one,” he said. Deming won the race at the Mid-Willamette Confer- ence District Track and Field Championships on Saturday with a time of 39.63 seconds. The race was a perfect cap to a stellar showing at Lebanon High School. Deming also took home district titles in the long jump (21 feet, 23¾ inches) and triple jump (44-5¼). “It means a lot,” Deming said. “It’s an amazing feeling to win three events.” The hardest may have been the triple jump — with Deming leaping past team- mates Aaron White and Evan Courtney. “I didn’t start off very well,” Deming said. “I had to focus on my phases and fun- damentals. My landing hadn’t been very good. Thankfully, on the last one, I got the landing down.” See DALLAS, Page 11A CLASS 5A TRACK AND FIELD STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS When: Friday, 9 a.m.; Saturday, 9:30 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Where: Hayward Field, University of Oregon, Eugene. PORTLAND — After dis- posing of Montana State Billings 4-2 on May 10, West- ern Oregon’s baseball team found itself in a pickle at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. Trailing 7-1 on Thursday to Central Washington, the Wolves needed to kickstart its offense to rally. And rally it did. WOU scored 12 unan- swered runs to defeat the Wildcats 13-7 before beating Northwest Nazarene in the title game on Friday 9-1. Against the Wildcats, Western Oregon chipped away at the lead, scoring two runs in the sixth and seventh innings before ex- ploding for eight runs in the eighth. The Wolves recorded five hits and were aided by two Central Washington errors during the eighth inning rally. Against Northwest Nazarene, WOU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. Jay Leverett hit a solo home run, while Brock Pradere, Connor McCord and Jacob Martinez each had two hits. Pitcher Brady Miller threw nine strikeouts over seven in- nings to earn the win. “I’m proud of the club for sticking with it through the year," coach Kellen Walker said. “They went through some tough situations dur- ing the year. They earned this one.” The title is WOU’s third in the last five seasons. Cam Walker was named the tournament’s Most Valu- able Player. Walker and Brady Miller each threw 10 strikeouts dur- ing the championships. Western Oregon finishes the season with a 31-15 record overall. PREP TRACK AND FIELD Panthers show guts at districts By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer LEBANON — The 2016-17 athletic year has been a frus- trating one for Central sen- ior Isaiah Abraham. Injuries cost him most of the football season and basketball. But he had a goal in mind — to step onto the track for the 4 x 100-meter relay along with teammates Sterling Hutchinson, Peter Mason and Issac Burgett at the Mid- Willamette Conference Dis- trict Track and Field Cham- pionships on Saturday. “I knew I could push through it,” Abraham said. “I knew I was going to be out here whether it hurt or not.” His teammates knew he was hurting, but were sup- portive of him throughout the spring. “We told him not to push it,” Mason said. “Districts is the only meet that matters. If you’re ready for that, then that’s all we want.” Hutchinson got Central off to a s t r o n g start, and Mason and Burgett only ex- tended it. “I knew Sterling Henke was going to get us a lead,” Mason said. “He’s one of the best starters in the league. My goal is to keep that lead or add to it.” When Burgett handed the baton off to Abraham, the Panthers entered the home- stretch in first. Abraham left it all on the track, anchoring the relay team to a first-place finish — but it cost him a possible level two hamstring strain. “It means a lot to be out there at least one more time with these guys,” Abraham said. “This was the first time we raced together. I’m happy to be able to at least come out here and help us get to state.” Coach Eli Cirino said he’s unsure whether Abraham will be able to compete at state. But for at least one race, everything was as the relay team envisioned it would be. “It cost us an injured teammate, but we made it to state,” Hutchinson said. “That’s good enough for me. I don’t think anyone else wanted this more than us.” — Sophomore Sophia Henke wanted to focus on the triple jump during the 2017 sea- son.
