We’re three weeks into the month of January, and it’s time for all the snow and ice to go away. As deadline nears for publi- cation, rainfall is predicted for the weekend, and most of us would welcome a re- turn to warmer tempera- tures without the fear of freezing rain. Let’s hope that we can get back to our usual complaints about wet dogs and kids tracking mud into the houses. — Many of our students heard their favorite winter phrase — schools are closed today — and had a great time playing in the snow, building forts and stockpil- ing snowballs for the next skirmish with their friends P ATTY T AYLOR D UTCHER Columnist and neighbors. Sleds and to- boggans were dragged out of garages and many of those of us of a certain age reflect- ed back to our own youthful antics, while watching from windows as a younger gener- ation celebrated the season. — We really enjoyed watch- ing Mr. Snowman appear on the lawn by the Monmouth Police Department and to see officers and local kids getting together for snow- ball fights and good outdoor fun last week. It was fun to see all the positive interac- tion and to share their en- thusiasm on a cold winter’s day. — Early last Wednesday morning, I drove out to Sheridan to officiate at a wedding that had been can- celed and rescheduled sever- al times. Because of the weather, I packed extra clothes, a flashlight, food and water, and set out in 4- wheel drive to Joe Franko’s 76 Station on Highway 99, where he filled the gas tank and gave me updated road reports. Driving along high- ways 22 and 18, I was grate- ful to see both Polk and Yamhill county sheriff’s cars, as well as state police offi- cers along the way. The roads had been plowed and sanded, so my journey was safe and uneventful. Stop- ping by the courthouse in Dallas on my return, I was happy to see that offices were open and services were being provided. Our first re- sponders and other public employees have gone the extra mile lately. — Monmouth Senior Center Director Sue Teal welcomes everyone to the open house, Thursday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The new addition will allow for even more activi- ties for seniors from MI Town and surrounding areas. Many folks have worked hard fundraising over the years, and now this has become a reality be- cause of the extra efforts of Mark Fancey and volunteers including Marie Kristiansen, Diane Nordyke, Jack Hinkle, Jim Allgood, and contribu- tions from so many others. See you there. HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY! PEDEE NEWS Our hearts go out to the LaVoie family, who lost 44- year-old David on Jan. 8. He was the son of Ted and Billie LaVoie and grandson of Dave and Joyce LaVoie and grew up in Pedee. In 2008, he was involved in a car accident that left him a paraplegic, hard on a guy who loved being outdoors and spend- ing his time hunting and fishing, but still he found ways to continue being out- side, hunting and enjoying his yard and garden. — Shawn and Trina Brother- ton spent two weeks in Florida with their kids Kali- na and Kindan, which is the A RLENE K OVASH Columnist longest vacation they’ve taken since their honey- moon 16 years ago. They played on the beach with Trina’s cousins and visited Sea World, Universal Stu- dios, and DisneyWorld. Their favorites were Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley at Uni- versal Studios, and Animal Kingdom of course, Trina being a vet. Highlights for the kids were the beach and catching lizards. And, Trina says, all this only possible because of Dave Ramsey classes seven years ago! Sadly, while they were gone, they lost their 31-year-old Arabian mare that had been part of Trina’s life for 30 years. — Speaking of Dave Ramsey, don’t forget that Thursday, is the preview session of his Financial Freedom class at 7 p.m. at Pedee Church. This first session is free. The classes start on Feb. 2, 7 to 8:30 p.m., and will run for nine weeks. Call the church or come to the preview Maverick Thomas Blocher was born to Jorel and Kali Blocher, of Dallas, at 1:05 p.m. on Dec. 26 at Silverton Hospital. On Jan. 8, even church was canceled (a very rare occurrence), which did give Pastor Daniel Russell and Eric Schwanke and Pam Burbank an opportunity to visit several people in the neighborhood, taking them cookies and bread and mak- ing sure all was OK with them.
