That’s something we weren’t ready for.” Perrydale played Willamette Valley Christian Tuesday after press time — a team that Newton consid- ers one of the favorites to win the Casco League this season. The Pirates play at Jewell on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., at Damascus Christian on Sat- urday at 4 p.m. and at Liv- ingstone Adventist on Tues- day at 5:30 p.m. “I think compared to a month ago, this team looks totally different,” Newton said. “I’m happy with our progress so far. At some point they have to under- stand that we can’t keep making the same mistakes.” BOYS DEFEAT MAPLETON: Perrydale’s boys basketball team topped Mapleton 65-41 on Thursday. The Mountaineers reeled off three-straight wins, de- feating St. Stephens Academy 48-36 on Dec. 27, Camas Val- ley 35-26 on Dec. 28 and Portland Waldorf 29-23 on Thursday — victories that coach Micke Kidd said show that little by little, Falls City is putting together the pieces. “The girls were aggressive throughout the tourna- ment,” Kidd said. “They at- tempted 53 free throws dur- ing the three games.” That is in part because of leadership from returning varsity players, including Houghtaling. Though only a sopho- more, she is embracing her role as a leader. Ho u g h t a l i n g l e d t h e Mountaineers in scoring in each of the team’s three wins, scoring 23 against St. Stephens, 16 against Camas Valley and 20 against Port- land Waldorf. “I really tried to work on my ball handling and work- ing to get open,” Houghtal- ing said. “I don’t want to just stand there. I want to get open and after a shot, attack the rim and rebound. I’m trying to be a role model of what we should be doing.” The hope is by building, Falls City will see its hard work pay off for years to come. “Maybe not this year, but next year we want to be at the district tournament,” Houghtaling said. “This is what this year is all about, building to next year.” BOYS BASKETBALL WINS THREE: The boys basketball team won three games last week. The Mountaineers defeat- ed Trinity Lutheran 49-47 on Dec. 27, Firm Foundation 55-30 on Dec. 28 and Portland Waldorf 60-37 on Thursday. “We are working a lot harder than we have in the past,” Jeremy Labrado said. “At first it started out with coach pushing us to go harder. Gradually we’ve kind of taken over to work hard our- selves.” That hard work paid off last week. Labrado scored 22 points against Trinity Lutheran — in- cluding a lay-in with two sec- onds left in overtime, and Austin Burgess added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Zach Varney scored seven points and hauled in 13 rebounds. Against Firm Foundation, Burgess had 21 points, and Labrado scored 18 points. Labrado and Burgess led Falls City again against Portland Wal- dorf. Labrado scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Burgess recorded 18 points and nine rebounds.
