He wants the chamber to do its part in making that happen. “That’s our job to support the business community and they have lost trust that that can happen,” Shinn said. “I would say that, if we do our job I think that that will pro- mote the business community growing and getting bet- ter.” His longer-term plans include developing a youth lead- ership program to work with high school students and finding ways to facilitate “conglomeration” between com- panies that improve the business community. “I would love to see the business community and the association community come together and do good things that everyone cares about,” he said. Shinn will discuss 90 conversations discoveries and his plans Monday during a “state of the chamber address,” the last chamber luncheon of the year. “I’m going to be honest with where we are at,” he said. “Then … talk about where we want to go in the next year.” Continued from Page 1A “You helped plant those trees that weren’t there when you got up this morning,” Fancey said. The instant gratification is rewarding, he said. Fancey has done more than oversee and care for hundreds of trees and parks over the years. He has taken community events under his wing, such as Music in the Park and Fourth of July. His love for music and in- volvement with Monmouth’s summer series lead to lead- ership with the Smith Fine Arts Series board of direc- tors, where he served as president and past-presi- dent, said Sandy Newland, Smith Fine Arts program manager. Fancey said he will always be a season ticket holder for the Smith Fine Arts. “I’m really proud to be as- sociated with the Smith Fine Arts because it’s world-class music in this small town where you literally walk down the street to hear fine music,” Fancey said. Fancey’s relentless work was integral to getting the Monmouth Senior Center ex- pansion completed, said Sue Teal, senior center manager. “Without Mark Fancey working in the background for the project, it could have taken a lot longer or not happened at all,” Teal said. Detective John Williams, the office’s coordinator on the project, said sher- iff’s employees aren’t the only people who pitch in extra. Two customers do- nated money once they found out why the children and officers were at the store Saturday. One of them had been arrested by deputies, but appreciated how she was treated by Polk’s officers. She offered $70. Williams said he told her it wasn’t necessary to give that much, but she insisted. He took the donation, with a message for her. “You paid for two kids,” he said. Williams estimated the event started about 20 years ago. He said the service integration team pays for snacks and gift wrap for the wrapping party at the Academy Build- ing’s gym. “It gives the kids a great experience with an officer they haven’t seen be- fore,” he said. “I get really attached (to the kids).
