Polk County Living Polk County itemizer-Observer • November 23, 2016 7A ENGAGEMENTS MI TOWN Davis-Locke Tomorrow is Thanksgiv- ing Day, and whether we celebrate Thanksgiving this year at home in MI Town or faraway, with generations of family members or with a few good friends, with a sumptuous dinner at home, at a restaurant, or a supper of stone soup and biscuits, it gives us all an opportunity to remember the good things in our lives that we so often take for granted. — If we’re driving over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house, we’re thankful for the local, county and state police offi- cers who are spending their day watching for traffic problems and doing their best to keep the streets and highways safe for us to get where we’re going and back home again. This gives me P ATTY T AYLOR D UTCHER Columnist an opportunity to add con- gratulations and best wishes to Monmouth Police De- partment’s Sgt. Matt Olaf- son, who was given a Life- saving Award at the recent Oregon Peace Officers’ Asso- ciation annual meeting, held earlier in the month. — Isn’t it great to flip a switch on the stove so that we can bake the pies and rolls, to cook the potatoes and green beans and bake the turkey to perfection? Thank our gas and electric company workers who are making sure lines are clear and the utilities are in good working order each and every day, especially as we approach the dark winter- time, when rain and snow can interfere with the best laid plans. — I’m thankful for the fire- fighters and paramedics who are always ready and prepared to arrive at our homes and businesses at the first sign of trouble. Whether a fire occurs in the kitchen or if Uncle Albert has chest pains after eating far too much pumpkin pie — a call to 911 brings trained profes- sionals to help save the day, and perhaps a life or two, no matter what the time of day or night. — Let’s try to set aside all the recent doom and gloom of politics and protests and disagreements, and think about those we love and share our lives with. Are the kids all grown up and far away and won’t be home for Thanksgiving dinner? Be thankful — and grateful — if they are healthy and happy and are but a tele- phone call away. If you’re alone and don’t have any friends or family to share the day with — there are numerous restaurants and social service organizations who would welcome you as either a guest or a volun- teer server, or both. Before we launch ourselves head- long into the busyness of Christmas shopping or traveling, let’s take time to think of all the good things and special people in our lives, and be thankful for our blessings.
