Polk County News 12A Polk County Itemizer-Observer • October 26, 2016 BIRTHS MI TOWN We drive by the police and fire stations nearly every day, and unless we have any rea- son to contact them via 911 or the regular office tele- phone lines, we don’t really think much about those first responders who are working hard 24/7/365. Oh, we occa- sionally see a police car in our rearview mirrors, which causes us to let up a bit on the accelerator for a few minutes, and we then take a deep breath when they turn off on another street or high- way. This past week’s explo- sions in both Portland and Astoria give us yet another reminder of these brave men and women who will re- spond to any incident where life and limb and property are endangered. Let’s hope we never have to make that call, but it’s comforting to know it will be answered. P ATTY T AYLOR D UTCHER Columnist — Saturday evening, The Monmouth-Independence Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a family-friend- ly evening of Spook-tacular Bingo at the MI Family YWCA from 1 until 4 p.m., so you’ll have time to do er- rands and other tasks be- fore you arrive. Cards are priced at $1 each, or a dozen can be purchased for $10. There will be lots of pr izes, and even cash awards are promised. Cos- tume contests will be held at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. — Monday is Halloween … and in case your resident ghost or goblin hasn’t re- minded you to be sure to lay in a supply of goodies for fun-loving kids of all ages, both of MI Town’s li- braries and merchants in Monmouth and Independ- ence are participating in all kinds of spook-tacular ac- tivities on All Hallows Eve. The fun begins at 4 p.m. and goes until 6 at the In- dependence library, where you can find all kinds of treats and only good tricks before visiting local busi- nesses participating in the Halloween fun. — Monmouth ghosties and their superhero friends can look forward to all kinds of fun activities and adven- ture from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in Bunch the meeting room at the Monmouth Public Library. T h e re g u l a r l i b ra r y i s closed on Mondays, but the doors will be open to the meeting room and the restrooms will be available, so everyone can enjoy this special event before trick or treating in the commu- nity. — Those of us who have registered to vote have re- ceived our ballots by now, and many have voted in this upcoming election. No matter how we may feel about the candidates at the top of the ticket, many of our friends and neighbors are running for various elective offices, so please do vote your conscience and mail your completed ballot promptly, or take it to your local library. PEDEE NEWS Firefighters from Pedee and Independence (and a Polk county deputy) re- sponded to a lightening fire in a tree across Kings Valley Highway from the school late Oct. 17. The lightning strike was very bright and the thunder deafening, rolling off into the distant west. It rattled the school and church, and chunks of the tree were scattered at least 150 feet in every direc- tion. The tree was alive, but the top had come out long ago, and so caught fire easi- A RLENE K OVASH Columnist ly in spite of the rain, which did eventually put it out while the guys watched. — Heidi Russell and Amy Gilson, of Falls City, started an “extracurricular studies homeschool co-op” for their children and other kids this Fall. Eight homeschoolers go once a week to study subjects such as astronomy, cooking, and strategy board games. — Pedee Church will be having Sunday evening services on the fifth Sunday of months with five Sun- days. This Sunday will be the first. — Pam Burbank will be leading a community Bible study starting on Nov. 1. The group will meet on Friday’s at 10 a.m. and will begin with 1 John. Contact Pam at 503-838-4103 for more in- formation. — Kids love to have their names in the paper so if any from Pedee or the sur- rounding area have a birth- day party or do something special (awards? honor roll?) please send me an email with the information, ko- vasha@gmail.com, and I can write it up.
