Polk County News 10A Polk County Itemizer-Observer • July 27, 2016 Wine: Delivery draws public interest JOLENE GUZMAN/ Itemizer-Observer Hank and the rest of the foursome of mules stop at the Willamette River in Independence for people to take photos. JOLENE GUZMAN/ Itemizer-Observer Commuters are surprised to see a stagecoach and mule team on the road in Polk County Friday morning. Ever professional, the mules aren’t bothered by the fuss. CRAFT WORKSHOP Sept. 17 (Register by August 15) Continued from Page 1A Claypool said she guess- es that they see them as holes in the ground and re- fuse to step on them. The team took great pains to avoid those dangers. Jesse even hopped over a few in hurried fashion when there was no other alternative. Each with at least 10 years of “pulling” experience, the team would frequently try to guess the next turn on the journey. Claypool had to redirect them when they de- cided they needed to pilot the trip. “They will navigate if you don’t,” she said, laughing. In other instances, they took detours because they wanted to make friends with other farm animals in fields Solution on Page 2A $5 Registration Fee* — All materials provided! *Scholarships available Learn a new skill! Meanwhile, people in cars or walking on the sidewalks slowed to watch them pass and took out their phones to capture the moment in pho- tos or video. Illahe used bicycles and its own horses, Doc and Bea, to deliver the wine last year, but found the stagecoach company when the owners stopped by the vineyard to taste wines. Louisa Woodworth, tast- ing room manager, decided to introduce them to wine- maker Brad Ford and the delivery plan hatched from there. On Friday, Gus, Hank, Jesse and Ywa took the wine right down to the river and caused a brief stir on the shoreline. A few photo ops later, the team pulled the empty stagecoach out of sight, heading to its next destination. Within minutes, 1899 and its escorts did the same, be- ginning a three-day paddle on the Willamette. Illahe was sending eight cases of the increasingly popular wine to Portland. It’s delivery method — which requires paddling and camping for three days — also has drawn interest since Brad Ford and a friend made the first run last year. Deliv- ery capacity shouldn’t be a concern in the future, said sales manager Bethany Ford. “We could have taken more with five canoes,” she said.
