Cancer: Houle excited to take part in Relay for Life Continued from Page 1A “She called me back and said, ‘Uh, we have a prob- lem. You have acute kidney failure,’” Houle recalled. Test after test led her to a kidney specialist, and finally to the oncology department. That’s when she finally heard the name of the can- cer that her mother had died from. Multiple myeloma is not hereditary, Houle said, and typically affects old, white, overweight males, she said. Doctors were surprised to find the disease in her. After chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant, and years of fighting, Houle is in remission. She still gets her blood work done regularly, but doctors call the break from chemo a “holiday,” she said. Houle had a support team, or as she calls it, her stomping team, but has never participated in Relay For Life. She said she looks forward to attending her first Survivor Lap at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed up with sharing her story with other survivors in the Survivor’s Tent. Hers is a story of hope and fighting and living — not taking anything for grant- ed — a message mirrored in each Relay event. This year’s theme is “May the Cure Be With You.” While Relay organizers keep the event upbeat and focused on the positive, the reality of the battle is strong. At 10 p.m. on Saturday, paper lanterns called Lumi- naria will line the track, lighting up the night with names of those who are fighting, those who have won, or those who have lost the battle with cancer. A member from each team walks the track throughout the 24 hours be- cause, as anyone who has participated in Relay knows, “Cancer doesn’t sleep, and neither do we.” POLK COUNTY — The Polk County Budget Committee approved the county’s 2016-17 budget on May 25, with a few changes, including grant funding for a joint program between the Sheriff’s Office and Behavioral Health. Funding would pay for a “mobile crisis team,” a sheriff’s deputy and crisis coun- selor, to work shifts. The grant also pays for a second team working in West Salem. Teams will respond to calls involving someone suffering from a mental health cri- sis in an effort to get that person help faster and avoid unnecessary trips Polk County Jail. “Taking them to our jail isn’t always the answer,” said Polk County Administrator Greg Hansen. He said with the program in place, more problems can be address in the field. “I think it’s going to be better for all in- volved,” Hansen said. Teams will be on the road as soon as pos- sible, he said. Behavioral health was able to secure the $750,000 grant, which will keep the teams on the road for 18 months. This year, $500,000 was budgeted to pay for the extra staff. Other changes include $72,000 added to health services to add a contracted coun- selor to be split between Dallas and Central school districts. The final change was a $1 million increase to behavioral health’s beginning fund bal- ance. Total changes ($1,667,000) bring the county’s total budget to about $66 million. The committee approved a 31.96 cents per $1,000 rate on the public safety levy, less than the 45 cents per $1,000 approved by voters. The lower rate was due to revenue from federal timber payments to counties slated for the 2016-17 fiscal year, presum- ably the last of those payments without Congressional action. “We offset like we said we would,” Com- missioner Mike Ainsworth said. Dallas was slated to re- ceive $17,000, part of which was already spent by the time the city found out it wasn’t coming. “We end up having to try to take those expendi- tures and having to find other funding sources in an already tight budget,” Foggin said. “If we were anticipating this early on, we could have planned for it.” Foggin said he took his concerns to Pope and was told to send an invoice for the amount. He did that and was asked to fill out the grant application, which he did, saying he didn’t mind going through the extra step. “In the scheme of things it’s not a lot of money,” Fog- gin said.
