Polk County News Polk County Itemizer-Observer • April 6, 2016 5A OBITUARIES Continued from Page 10A Ellen Eugenia Allen Sept. 3, 1922 – March 30, 2016 Ellen Allen, 93, of Salem, died on March 30. She was born to Jessie and Eugene Hubbard in Dundee. While living in nearby Newberg, Ellen met and mar- ried Floyd H. Allen in October 1941. Their long and happy marriage took them to Port- land and Alamogordo, N.M., during Floyd’s service in the Army Air Corps, finally set- tling on the family farm near Rickreall. They were active mem- bers of Salem’s First Chris- tian Church for many years. After retirement, Ellen and Floyd moved to Salem- towne, where they celebrat- ed their 50th wedding an- niversary. They spent part of their winters in Indio, Calif. Ellen shared a love of family and family history. Staying in touch was very important to her, prompting her to learn how to use email in her 80s. In 2009, Ellen moved to Lancaster Village in Salem. Survivors include her chil- dren, Susan Walker (Colin), Terry Allen (Janet) and Jane Shanklin (Jim); four grand- children; and six great- grandchildren. Service is Friday at 11 a.m. at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Chapel. A reception will follow at Oak Knoll Golf Course. Contributions are sug- gested to a charity of your choice. Dennis Alan Duranceau April 2, 1947 – April 1, 2016 Dennis Alan Duranceau, 68, of Dallas, died Friday. He was born in Green Bay, Wis., to Jane and LaVere Du- ranceau. The family moved first to Palm Springs, Calif., before set- tling in Redlands, Calif., where he spent his school years. He graduated from Red- lands High School in 1965. At age 16, Dennis began a lifelong ca- reer in the grocery industry, starting as a box boy for a local market. Over the years, he managed a number of different supermarkets be- fore being promoted to buyer at a large grocery chain. In 1991, Dennis and his wife, Carol, and daughter, Celeste, moved to Oregon, settling in Dallas. Three years later, a job change took the family up to Ch- eney, Wash. They returned to Dallas four years later. In 1998, they purchased the Dallas IGA (later Dallas Se- lect Market) in downtown Dallas, which they owned and operated for eight years. He was active in many com- munity organizations and a longtime member of Rotary. He loved participating in the Summerfest Parade with the store personnel. Upon selling the store, Dennis took a position with Unified Grocers, where he continued his career. He served in various ca- pacities with the Boy Scouts of America, including as Scoutmaster and in district positions and on Scout com- mittees. Many weekends over his life were spent on Scout campouts, hikes, service projects and other activities. Active in The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints, Dennis served in many leadership capacities over the years, including as bishop in Cheney. He loved the Green Bay Packers, fishing, golfing, restoring cars and going to garage sales. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Carol; son, Chris Duranceau, of Australia; daughters, Alecia Everett (David), of Flower Mound, Texas, and Celeste Van Wie (Matt), of Hillsboro; step- mother, Shirley Duranceau, of McMinnville; brothers, David Duranceau, of Sun City, Calif., and Dale Du- ranceau (Lindy), of Indio, Calif.; sisters, Debbie Young (Bob), of Pahrump, Nev., and Dawn Hone (Phil), of Red- lands; five grandchildren; and a large extended family. Service is Friday at 10 a.m. at The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints in Dallas. Interment will fol- low at the Dallas Cemetery. To send an online tribute: www.dallastribute.com. George Birchell Feb. 22, 1925 – April 3, 2016 G e o r g e Wa s h i n g t o n Birchell, 91, of Dallas, and former resident of Pedee, died Sunday. He was born in Carlsbad, N.M., to William H. Birchell and Malinda Bowman Birchell. George worked on the family farms while attending school. He graduated from Carlsbad High School at 17, and enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He attended different training schools and then volunteered for sea duty dur- ing World War II. He was assigned to the carrier USS Lexington in Oc- tober 1943, working with a torpedo bomber crew. Their ship was hit by a kamikaze attack and also by a torpedo. George was not injured. He was discharged in February 1946. In the late spring of 1946, the family moved to a farm in Pedee, where they kept dairy cows. He also worked at local saw mills. In 1950, he married Wilda Mae Timbrel and worked at Willamette Industries in Dallas. They later moved to Dallas, w h e r e George en- joyed a big garden, growing vegetables and flow- ers, espe- cially roses. George also loved hunting and fishing w i t h friends and working in his wood shop. G e o r g e re t i re d f r o m Willamette Industries in 1986. In late summer of 2015, George and Wilda moved to assisted living in Dallas Retirement Village. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Birchell; sisters, Mary Snow- den and Helen Bowman; daughter, Kathy Woods; and son, Brian Birchell. Survivors include his wife, Wilda Mae; son, Olin (Vicki); sisters, Alma Irish, Dorothy Richardson and Willie Jane Nordal; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and extended family. Celebration of life will be held at a later date. His family suggests in re- membrance of George, to do a kind deed for someone. Albert Lawrence Graham Jan. 2, 1929 – March 27, 2016 Albert Lawrence Graham, 87, of Monmouth, died March 27 in Monmouth. Albert was born in Falls City to Floyd and Elsie Graham. He graduated from Falls City High School in 1947. He married Wanda, his high school sweetheart, in 1950. A f t e r moving to Valsetz, Albert worked for Boise Cascade for 35 years. He had a passion for geneal- ogy and hybridizing flowers. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Wanda; children, Cheryl Black, Audrey (Ron) Warkentin, Linda (Mickey) Taylor, Floyd Graham and Laura Iwanaga; seven grand- children; and one great- grandchild. Memorial service was Fri- day at Bridgeport Community Chapel. Private burial was at the Upper Falls City Cemetery. Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center handled arrangements.
