There was one player in particular that in- spired him. “I always loved to watch Brandon Roy from the Portland Trailblazers,” Janesofsky said. “He was a very good player and showed a lot of • See the 2015-16 Item- heart while playing izer-Observer All-Region through knee and team on page 14A. other injuries. MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL PREP SOFTBALL Former coach becomes Jackson’s first Western’s ‘biggest fan’ game turns into a By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer REGIS — Of all the fans rooting for Western Oregon’s men’s basketball team dur- ing its run in the NCAA Divi- sion II tournament, one has a special relationship to many of the current players — one who played a major role in helping WO U g e t to where it is now. Bergeson Brady Bergeson coached the Wolves from 2011-2015. De- spite leaving the team to be- come head coach at Regis University in Colorado, there’s no sign of hard feel- ings or regret. When Bergeson arrived in Monmouth, WOU was far from the national power it was this season. The team had never won a regular sea- son or conference tourna- ment title, but Bergeson had a grand vision for the pro- gram. “The building process for us was about the types of people we wanted to bring in,” Bergeson said. “One is The March continues ... For Dallas coach Brandi Jackson, the game will go down as one to remember. The matchup was her first as a varsity head coach, but the game took on an even bigger moment. Jackson’s father is the head coach for Roseburg. “It was emotional,” Jack- son said. “It’s the first time I’ve gone against my dad. I’ve played for him my whole life, so it was excit- ing.” The Dragons gave up eight runs over the first two innings before settling down. “I’m hoping we’re more relaxed now,” Jackson said. “We had some jitters and made some mistakes that we typically don’t make and haven’t made (those mis- takes) in practice.” The first few innings www.facebook.com/pages/Polk-County-Itemizer-Observer/205062686252209 were defined by multiple errors. Jackson wants to see her experienced players start to become more vocal leaders in the dugout. “We need our seniors to step up and take those younger kids under their wings,” Jackson said. “We need to try and pick each other up after errors and stuff. I think they saw how quiet it got after an error and how intimidating how it can be for an underclassmen to try and pick herself up.” See FAMILY, Page 15A Up next • Dallas competed at the Medford Spring Break Tournament on Monday and Tuesday. • The Dragons defeated La Salle 13-1 and Eagle Point 9-6 on Monday af- ternoon. • Dallas played Sheldon and Marshfield Tuesday after press time. • The Dragons open Mid-Willamette Confer- ence play on Tuesday at Woodburn.
