RECYCLE By Jolene Guzman The Itemizer-Observer JOLENE GUZMAN/ Itemizer-Observer file The Dallas City Council discussed possibly moving the Dallas Bounty Market from the Academy lawn near the corner of Main and Academy streets to downtown Dallas. City council considers bounty market location By Jolene Guzman The Itemizer-Observer DALLAS — Polk County Bounty Market launches its seventh season at the Acade- my Building lawn in May, but there has been explo- ration of moving it back downtown in the future. The Dallas Area Visitors Center, which runs the mar- ket, conducted a survey of downtown businesses and market vendors to answer questions posed by the Dal- las City Council about the best location. Monday, Chelsea Metcalfe, the visitors center executive director, reported the results to the council during its monthly workshop. All 12 of the core market vendors who responded to the survey about the loca- tion said they would prefer to stay on the Academy lawn near the corner of Main and Academy streets. Bonnie Dreier, the market manager, said most vendors would make the move, though some reluctantly. One vendor wouldn’t return if the market was moved and others would have to make a choice. “Several of the vendors commented that this is not the market they make the most money in,” Metcalfe said. “They make money in larger markets … but be- cause they are Polk County businesses, they want to in- vest in their community and be a part of what is here.” Of downtown businesses, two-thirds of the 28 busi- nesses surveyed would like the market downtown, Met- calfe said. “Most believe that hosting the market downtown will increase their foot traffic, which we don’t disagree with that, but wonder if that is our purpose in bringing the market downtown,” Met- calfe said. The market would not be able to use the Polk County Courthouse lawn due to up- keep costs during the 22- week season. That means closing a street to put on the market each week. Parking limitation and noise while court is in session were also concerns voiced in the sur- vey. City Manager Ron Foggin said the issue with the cur- rent location is that the mar- ket is more likely to “fall off people’s radar” because it is not as visible. Metcalfe proposed if the Academy location re- mains — which market ven- dors and managers would prefer — that the market work in partnership with downtown businesses and Dallas Downtown Associa- tion to highlight what is available downtown. “But we also believe there is an excellent opportunity and value in partnering with the downtown businesses, particularly through the DDA, in making Thursdays a bigger event in all of our downtown,” Metcalfe said. MADRAS — Former Polk County resident Mitchell Julio Morris is facing mur- der and manslaughter charges in connection to the Feb. 26 deaths of his r o o m - mates. Morris, 20, now of Crooked R i v e r Lyman Ranch, and the two vic- tims in the crime, Macken- z i e Lyman, 21, and Bailee Ray Candello- Southwick South- wick, 18, all are former resi- dents of the Dallas area. Morris has been charged with two counts each of murder, manslaughter, criminally negligent homi- cide, and unlawful use of a weapon and one count of unauthorized use of a vehi- cle in the crime that took place in the Crooked River Ranch home the three shared. He was arraigned in Jef- ferson County Circuit Court on Friday and is being held at Jefferson County Jail without bail. Lyman is a 2013 graduate of South Salem High School and she and Candello- Southwick had been in a re- lationship for a year. They lived in Crooked River Ranch and worked at Brightwood Lumber in R e d - m o n d . Morris was their r o o m - mate. Je f f e r - s o n County S h e r i f f ’s Morris Office deputies responded to a re- port of a shooting at about 6:50 p.m. in the 9000 block of Southwest Sand Ridge Road in Crooked River Ranch. Deputies found Lyman and Candello- Southwick dead; both had been shot. Police launched an ex- tensive search for Morris, who was believed to be headed to the Polk County area. Salem police officers lo- cated and arrested Morris in West Salem the next day. He was taken back to Jeffer- son County after the arrest. A memorial service for Candello-Southwick and Lyman will be on Saturday at Grace Community Church, 598 E. Ellendale in Dallas.
