Mann aims for state title Accident can’t keep Cutler from bowling By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer DALLAS — For Morrison senior Stephanie Cutler, making state is more than a triumph in athletics. It’s a return to a sport few, if any, thought she’d ever get to play again and a refusal to let a life-threatening situation keep her down. — It was a normal afternoon on Dec. 17, 2015. Cutler was on her way to Starlite Lanes, much like she had done throughout her high school career. Only this time, she wouldn’t arrive. “I’m walking to bowling practice and the next thing I know I’m in a hospital bed and I don’t know why I’m here,” Cutler said. While crossing the street near the corner of Walnut Avenue and Main Street, Cutler was hit by a pickup truck. She was placed in a medical-induced coma for two days. “They never thought I was going to wake up,” Cutler said. “They thought I would be mentally challenged for the rest of my life, that I wouldn’t be able to speak English or remember how to do my school work. Basically, they thought that I’d forget everything.” See CUTLER, Page 12A By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer DALLAS — Morrison sen- ior Luke Mann had never picked up a bowling ball be- fore his freshman year of high school. “I saw an ad in the (Dallas) s c h o o l paper and I thought it l o o k e d pretty fun,” Mann said. Curiosity Mann got the better of him and Mann joined Dallas’ bowling team that year, though he soon realized he had a lot to learn. Building at Western Oregon University will host the Sec- ond Annual First Respon- der’s charity basketball game Friday at 5:15 p.m. Monmouth and Inde- pendence oicers will play against ireighters/medics from the Polk County Fire District. The event is free. Donations will be ac- cepted. Money raised dur- ing the event will go to- ward supporting irst re- sponders. www.polkio.com INDEPENDENCE — Cen- tral sophomore swimmer AnneMarie Hasbrook isn’t one to shout at teammates, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t one of the Panthers leaders. “A n - neMarie is a silent leader,” Ce n t ra l coach Jennifer Tress said. “She isn’t as loud as some of the other swim- mers, but she is a very hard worker. She takes initiative in asking for feedback on her stroke and asking for splits during races. An- neMarie is one of the strongest swimmers for the LUKAS EGGEN/Itemizer-Observer Central sophomore AnneMarie Hasbrook swims the freestyle during a practice on Jan. 27. girls team and I have really enjoyed coaching her.” Hasbrook, who finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 33.10 seconds and third in the 100 freestyle (1:11.35) at South Albany on Jan. 26 has become one of the girls team’s top swimmers. “I’m really happy so far,” Hasbrook said. “I was kind of iffy at first with a new coach coming in and not knowing who she was and how she was going to play out.” Hasbrook is no stranger to the pool, taking swim les- sons at the age of 2. By the time she was 5, she had joined a club team. Has- brook grew addicted to the nature of the sport. “I definitely like how as much work as you put in is what you’re going to get out of it,” Hasbrook said. “It’s up to you. You’re held account- able. I really enjoy it.” That kind of personal re- sponsibility has helped the sophomore excel in other parts of life as well. “It’s kept me strong- minded,” Hasbrook said. “It takes a lot of mental strength to keep going when you really don’t want t o. T h a t ’s h e l p e d m e through a lot of things.” See LEADER, Page 11A www.facebook.com/pages/Polk-County-Itemizer-Observer/205062686252209 By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer DALLAS — In all of Dallas girls basketball coach David Brautigam’s years of experi- ence, he’s never had a sea- son quite like this one. E v e r y team deals with its share of in- juries, but the Drag- ons have Zwicker been hit by the injury bug harder than Brautigam’s ever seen dur- ing his coaching career.
