Polk County Sports Polk County Itemizer-Observer • January 27, 2016 11A Showdown: Country Christian beats Pirates on Dec. 19 Continued from Page 10A Perrydale has won its last six Casco League contests. Several players have showed significant improve- ment during that stretch, in- cluding freshman Shylar Halverson, who has earned a role as a starter and al- lowed the Pirates to play at a quicker pace right from the opening tip. The emergence of several inexperienced players helped Perrydale im- prove to 9-1 in league play, good for second place. “You see the younger girls feeling better about them- selves, so they start to play even better (during games),” senior Telaney Newton said. “The younger girls learned our system and we’ve thrown in some new things on defense. It’s coming together.” Newton and Anna McGill continue to be leaders on the court on offense, but they remain overwhelmingly responsible for scoring and making the offense function at a high level. “We need to get our younger girls to shoot more,” Telaney Newton said. “They can do it. We see it in practice. It’s the whole confi- dence thing. They need to believe in themselves.” Newton and McGill have taken it upon themselves to help foster that belief through positive reinforce- ment during games and practices. “If I were a freshman, I would be scared to go out there and they do it without batting an eyelash,” Telaney Newton said. A big test is coming looms for the Pirates. Beating some of the league’s worst teams in Jewell and C.S. Lewis is one thing. It’s the games against the teams at the top that will show just how good this team can be. “I’m looking forward to t h e m o re c o m p e t i t i v e games,” McGill said. “Even against St. Paul, playing against someone who has strong players who are big- ger than us, I enjoy playing in those games and having us all together.” It won’t be long until the Pirates have their shot at an- other big game. Perrydale plays at Living- stone Adventist Wednesday (today) before a showdown at Country Christian on Monday. Country Christian, which entered the week ranked No. 1 in Class 1A and undefeated in league play, handed the Pirates their lone league loss on Dec. 19. Country Christian pres- ents a daunting challenge. The team has scored 53 or more points in all but one of its games and has scored 60 or more points in all but three, but the Pirates hope to show they’re ready to join the league’s elite teams. “We’re fine tuning,” Terry Newton said. “We went from being a bigger, slower team to a smaller, faster team. Against St. Paul, that’s as big of a team we’ll see all year. We held our own. The score was deceiving. It was a fan- tastic effort.” The Pirates will likely need an even better effort against Country Christian, but no matter what the out- come, Terry Newton said this experience will only serve to make them stronger. “This has been a growth process,” he said. “I think coaches will say we don’t want to have Perrydale at the end, because they know we’ll be playing well at the end of the season.” WESTERN OREGON ROUNDUP Men’s basketball moves into top spot in conference standings Itemizer-Observer staff report MONMOUTH — Facing two of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s top teams, Western Oregon’s men’s basketball squad moved into first place after defeating Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks last week.
