Polk County Sports Polk County Itemizer-Observer • January 6, 2016 11A NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE Dragons: Dallas ready for Williams catches first touchdown league opener on Friday By Lukas Eggen Continued from Page 10A “We know how tough league is going to be this year,” senior Everett Mina- han said. “Last year, there were a few teams that were really good and it kind of fell off from there. This year, our league is pretty stinking good. Ever y chance we get to improve, we need to take advantage of those opportunities. I think we’re a little bit be- hind schedule. Our effort’s there. We need to simplify things and get back to what we do best.” This season, that means spreading the floor, relying on the speed that comes with playing with a smaller lineup than most teams. Finding good looks at the basket is imperative — as is rebounding. “If we don’t hit shots, we lose some defense because of going small,” Minahan said. “We have to make a conscious effort to box out and re- bound, because t h a t ’ s something w e d o n’t necessari- ly work on every day.” White The Dr- agons let North Medford and McKay shoot a com- bined 53 percent during its two losses. Dallas held Aloha to 44 percent shoot- ing during its win. Aside from leading scorer Minahan, junior guard Jake Collins has established him- self as a key rotation player for the Dragons. “He has done a really good job attacking the bas- ket,” Schwartz said. “He has a lot of quickness on de- fense. He was swinging be- tween junior varsity and varsity as recently as the summer league. This win- ter, he’s started one game for us when Harry (Broad- us) was out and he’s one of the first guys coming off the bench.” Collins missed the holiday tournament because of a broken nose suffered during practice. He is expected back soon. Dallas also hopes to have Aaron White, who has been out with an injured wrist, to return soon. He was sched- uled to be re-evaluated by doctors this week. Even with the pending re- turn of those players, the Dragons aren’t in a position to coast, something Schwartz will continue to stress throughout the sea- son. “We can’t underestimate anyone,” Schwartz said. “If we want to finish in the top four in our conference, which is one of our team goals, we’ll have to win the games we’re supposed to win on paper and play well against some of the teams picked above us.” The Itemizer-Observer DENVER — It took West- ern Oregon alumni Tyrell Williams until the last game of the regular season to record his first catch with the San Diego Chargers. He made sure it was worth the wait. Williams hauled in an 80- yard touchdown catch, his first as a professional, dur- ing the Chargers’ 27-20 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. “It’s a weird feeling,” Williams said. “It was like an outer-body experience. It was awesome.” Williams was part of the active roster with the Chargers for eight games during the 2015-16 sea- son. He made the opening day roster after signing with the Chargers as an undraft- ed free agent. He spent multiple weeks on the team’s practice squad, but returned to the active roster LUKAS EGGEN/Itemizer-Observer file Tyrell Williams caught his first NFL touchdown Sunday. in week 10. “It was a good season,” Williams said. “It was defi- nitely frustrating at times. I want to go out there and play. I don’t want to just be on the team. I want to be one of the guys out there making plays.” He finished with two catches for 90 yards. Williams plans to return to Oregon for a few weeks before going back to Cali- fornia to begin training for a new season. “It’s a cool thing to be a part of,” Williams said. “It’s pretty close to how I pic- tured it would be.” SCOREBOARD BOYS BASKETBALL MID-WILLAMETTE Team League South Albany 0-0 Corvallis 0-0 Crescent Valley 0-0 Lebanon 0-0 Silverton 0-0 Woodburn 0-0 Dallas 0-0 Central 0-0 Tuesday, Dec. 29 Result McKay 70, Dallas 53 All 6-3 6-3 6-4 5-2 5-4 4-4 4-5 4-5 McKAY 70, DALLAS 53 Dec. 29 Box Score DALLAS (53) — Welty 13, Minahan 12, Broadus 7, Wallace 6, Laizure 5, Richey 4, Courtney 3, Koons 2, Dimick 1, Ronco.
