Ellingson, 95, died Saturday, October 31, at her home in Willson House, Salem, OR. Helen was born June 4, 1920, in Spokane, Washington, to Ben- jamin and Bernice Blakesley. She was raised in Spokane where she met and married her husband of 73 years, James Ellingson, who preceded her in death in 2014. She was trained as a legal secretary, but was happiest in her role as wife and mother to their three daughters. They moved to Hermiston in 1946 and then to Eugene where Jim attended the Uni- versity of Oregon to complete his Ed.D. degree. Helen and Jim continued raising their family in Salem from 1962 until 1971 before moving to Independence where they owned and operated a small Christmas tree farm for 10 years. Helen enjoyed sewing and taught her daughters and oth- ers to sew through the 4-H program. There were many en- joyable family activities such as camping and traveling to the coast or Mt. Adams and their cabin on the North Fork of the Santiam. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed en- tertaining as well as square dancing, hiking and traveling with many friends. Helen and Jim had fun visiting local festivities and the various fields of flowers that decorate the area. Helen and Jim were active members of the Methodist Church and the Sons of Norway. After Jim’s retirement, they traveled to Norway and other European countries as well as Hawaii and visited the daughters and grandchildren at their different locations through the years. The grand- children were a special joy. Helen is survived by daughters Pat Ennes (Richard), Carol Mulder, Louise Roth (Ted); seven grandchildren, Greg Mulder, Eric Mulder, Cameron Mulder, Nikol Rochez, Kjirsten Petersen, Darcy Hawes, Jeremy Roth, and nine great grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Salem, Oregon on Tuesday, Novem- ber 3. We are grateful for the care they received at Will- son House since moving there in 2006 when Helen’s health declined. They appreciated the beautiful setting and flow- ers that could be seen from their window. Contributions can be made in her name to Willson House United Methodist Retirement Center or the United Methodist Church of Salem. Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service is assisting the family. Betty began working after high school as an office manager for the Salem Hos- pital, but was not able to maintain the position due to her husband entering the military. She wanted to support Tom and follow him wherev- er he was stationed, which for her meant working vari- ous jobs while he was enlist- ed. Tom was discharged and they re- turned to the Salem area and settled in Dallas in 1 9 5 2 , where they bought a large farm. In 1955, Betty began working again, this time for Dallas Credit Bureau, which was bought out by Equifax, where she continued to work as the manager in Salem before retiring in 1979. She received several awards on behalf of her commitment to various business organizations she was a part of in Polk County, including the Dallas Area Chamber of Commerce. After retirement, she helped work on the farm, but mostly she enjoyed her travels, from Canada to Mexico and throughout Eu- rope, even many cruises in- cluding the Panama Canal. She enjoyed attending her church, St. Philip Catholic Church in Dallas, where she was a member for more than 63 years. She loved her congrega- tion and the parishioners she played cards with there. Most of all Betty loved spending time with her fam- ily and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom; a brother; and three sisters. Survivors include her sons, Thomas and Greg Fisher; daughters, Jolene Moskal and Paula Warkentin; 10 grandchil- dren; and 16 great-grand- children.
