Labrado rushed for 128 yards and three touch- downs, while throwing for 150 yards. Running back Zach Weems also ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns, but after building a 26-16 lead in the third quarter, Siletz Val- ley scored 20 unanswered points to lead 36-26 late in the fourth. “ We’re n o t a p p l y i n g what we’re doing in prac- tices onto the field 100 per- c e n t , ” Cook said. “Maybe we’re not quite lin- ing up in Weems the spac- ing that we show. If we ex- ecute and do what we’re supposed to do, that’s not a game. That’s where we have to get to.” Breakdowns on defense allowed several big plays, in- cluding a touchdown on the last play of the first half and stalled offensive drives early in the fourth quarter. “We’re so close,” Labrado said. “We just made a couple of mistakes here and there. I know we can do it. We have everything in place. The mistakes just kill us.” Perhaps more important than the strength condition- ing is that Cook has lit a com- petitive fire in his players. “Even when we’re down, we come back and fight,” Labrado said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re going to give 100 percent and play every play like it’s our last.” That at- t i t u d e didn’t exist a year ago, Cook said a s h e’s stressed changing the team’s J. Labrado thinking from expecting a loss to feel- ing like they belong on the field with anyone. “We won’t let them (give up),” Cook said. “We’re going to compete from start to fin- ish. They used to compare themselves to opponents. You can’t do that. Everyone puts their britches on one leg at a time. Now, they’re starting to compete from the start.” While the wins have yet to follow, opponents’ percep- tion of the Mountaineers is starting to change. “It ain’t no easy out against Falls City,” Cook said. “Anyone we play will tell you.” That includes Siletz Val- ley senior defensive line- man Tyee Rilatos who ad- dressed the Mountaineers during their team meeting after the game with a sim- ple message: Falls City was among Siletz’s toughest op- ponents. “That speaks volume to have an opponent come up like that,” Cook said. “That holds way more weight than from coaches.” In Cook’s eyes, Falls City has made some important strides this season. Translat- ing that to consistent suc- cess on game nights could be a longer journey than ex- pected. “This might be one of those later success stories,” Cook said. “I hope not for these seniors and these kids in the program.” PERRYDALE ROUNDUP Pirates defeat Ione, improve to 6-0 overall Itemizer-Observer staff report IONE — Perrydale’s foot- ball team cruised to a 62-20 victory over Ione on Thurs- day to remain undefeated. The Pirates (6-0 overall, 4-0 Special District 4) led 56-12 at halftime. Junior Haylen Janesofsky scored six touchdowns, while Brant Barnes scored twice. Janesofsky, Barnes and Kirk Fairchild each re- turned an interception for a touchdown. Quarterback Daniel Domes threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns. Bai- ley and B a r n e s combined for 228 yards on the ground as they filled in for Keenan Domes Bailey, who suffered a minor ankle in- jury in the first quarter. Barnes and Alex Hawes had 12 and 8 tackles, respective- ly, to lead the team on de- fense. “The offensive line of Fa i rc h i l d , Ja c o b Po p e, Hunter Sagmoen and Spencer Bibler again did a great job opening holes and protecting the passer,” Pe r r yd a l e c o a c h C h r i s Gubrud said. “Overall we played well but still need to do a better job tackling in space and preventing the big play.” Perrydale hosts Sherman on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. VOLLEYBALL WINS THREE OF FOUR: Perrydale’s volley- ball team won three of four matches last week. The Pirates defeated Crosshill Christian 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 15- 12 on Oct. 6 and Falls City 25- 16, 25-6, 25-13 on Thursday. Perrydale lost to North Dou- glas 25-14, 25-20, 22-25, 25-17 before defeating Damascus Christian 25-11, 25-16, 25-11 on Friday. The Pirates played Country Christian Tuesday after press time. Perrydale closes out its regular season at Jewell on Thursday before hosting C.S. Lewis Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Pirates entered the week with a 10-1 record in Casco League play. SCOREBOARD WOU ROUNDUP Football upsets North Alabama Itemizer-Observer staff report MONMOUTH — West- ern Oregon’s football team earned its biggest win of the season so far, defeating North Alabama 24-22 on Saturday. Quarterback Phillip Fen- umiai entered the game for the Wolves in the third quarter after starter David Sowards was injured. Fenu- miai gained 117 yards of total offense, including hit- ting tight end Andy Avgi for an 8-yard touchdown pass to put WOU up 24-16 with 4:35 left in the game. Fenu- miai also scored on a 13- yard run. The Wolves host Central Washington Saturday at 1 p.m. SOCCER DROPS T WO: Western Oregon’s soccer squad lost a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Confer- ence, falling to Concordia 2-0 on Oct. 6 and Seattle Pacific 3-1 on Saturday. Savannah Rogan scored the Wolves’ lone goal against the Falcons on Saturday. WOU could not overcome a hat trick from SPU’s Hannah Huesers, as Western Oregon fell to 5-5- overall and 1-4-1 GNAC. The Wolves play at Saint Martin’s on Thursday and Concordia on Saturday. V O L L E Y B A L L FA L L S : Western Oregon’s volleyball lost a pair of conference matches, falling in straight sets to Simon Fraser on Thursday and Western Wash- ington on Saturday. The Clan defeated WOU 25-20, 26-24, 25-17. The Vikings earned a 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 win. Paige Kelsey recorded 10 kills and Christie Colasurdo had 21 digs to lead the Wolves. RIBICH LEADS CROSS- COUNTRY: Western Oregon’s cross-country team competed at the Western Washington In- vitational on Saturday. The men’s team placed 9th, while the women’s squad inished 11th. Sophomore David Ribich inished 13th overall in the 10,000-meter men’s race in 32 minutes, 2 seconds. Nicole Maurmann inished with a time of 23:12, taking 38th overall. WOU will compete in the G N AC C h a m p i o n s h i p i n Bellingham, Wash. on Oct. 24. Itemizer-Observer Athlete of the Week Haylen Janesofsky Perrydale High Janesofsky, a junior, was a touch- down machine for Perrydale’ football team on Thursday. The running back/cornerback scored six touch- downs during a 62-20 win over Ione. Janesofsky scored twice on the ground, three times through the air and once on an interception return. Jane- sofsky had one of three interceptions returned for a touchdown during the victory. Krista Omlid Central High Omlid, a sophomore, was a key fac- tor for Central’s volleyball squad. Omlid led the Panthers with 22 kills during Central’s 25-15, 25-22, 17-25, 16-25, 15- 5 victory over Crescent Valley on Oct. 7. Omlid was also a force at the net, recording three blocks. Omlid’s performance helped the Panthers enter Tuesday’s match against Lebanon in a tie for third place in the Mid- Willamette Conference with Dallas and Corvallis.
