EMILY MENTZER/Itemizer-Observer Hermia’s father, Egeus (Gabriel Smith), asks Theseus, the Duke of Athens (Chase Magill), if he may kill his daughter Hermia (Jillian Flannagan) for disobeying his wishes for her to marry Demetrius (Sean Flannagan). ALL BUT A DREAM? ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ to play on WOU’s outdoor stage By Emily Mentzer The Itemizer-Observer MONMOUTH — As the sun dips below the tree line at Western Oregon Universi- ty, shade creeps across the lawn at the outdoor am- phitheater. It’s still warm, but cooler there near the stage. Are you dreaming, or are fairies play- ing pranks on Athenians on stage? No, it’s not a heat-induced vision, but Apple Box The- ater’s production of “A Mid- summer Night’s Dream,” by William Shakespeare, adapt- ed for the young actors by Maren Anderson. Fairies and mischief go hand in hand during this walk in the woods gone wrong. Helena and Hermia are best friends — and have been forever — but are thrown into a jealous com- petition because “Everyone likes Hermia, so Helena is left out,” explained Delaney McCannell, 13, who plays Helena. By “everyone,” Delaney means boys. Hermia loves Lysander; Lysander loves Hermia. Demetrius also loves Hermia, and her father in- sists she marry Demetrius or face certain death, according to ancient Athenian law. Rather than choose be- tween death and the nun- nery, Hermia and Lysander head into the woods to m a r r y. H e l e n a t e l l s Demetrius, and they all head into Fairyland where the king and queen of fairies will play with their emotions to comedic ends. “In the end, everything’s OK,” Delaney said. “Mine (Demetrius) has a love po- tion, so the rest of his life is a lie, but that’s OK.” Delaney said she had to channel what Helena feels: anger, balanced with sad- ness. “You’re not normally an angry, sad person,” said Jil- lian Flannagan, 12, who plays Hermia. The play presents a few challenges, specifically touching a boy, Jillian said. “I just have to do it for the play, I guess,” she said about a scene where she has to hug Lysander. Even with the evening shade, the sun has been bak- ing the cement stage of the amphitheater all day, and the young actors feel the heat. “You have to walk bare- foot on it,” Jillian said. “You have to lay on it.” “You know, cooking like bacon,” Delaney added.
