Mauk, who was adopted when she was 7, had an im- mediate connection to her four-legged friends. “My mom put me on a horse and I cried (with joy),” Mauk said. “I didn’t want to get off.” Riding is now an in- tegral part of her life. “It helps me escape r e a l i t y,” Mauk said. Mauk “If I’ve had a tough day or a rough week at school or work, I go for a ride and my mind just goes to the horse.” Eight years later, and Mauk will help repre- sent Dallas at the Ore- gon High S c h o o l Equestrian Team state champi- Dalke onships June 24-27 in Redmond. Senior came up big for Central By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer MONDAY, JUNE 22 Baseball: American Le- gion: Demarini Dirtbags at Eugene (DH), 5 p.m. Division I Junior Baseball: Central at Cascade, 6 p.m. INDEPENDENCE — It was a moment four years in the making for Central senior Ryanne Huffman. Leading 10-2 against Ashland in the Panthers’ play-in game, Huffman stepped up to the plate and accomplished something she never had before — hit a home run. This particular home run was extra special. She hit a grand slam that gave Central a 14-2 win in the team’s final home game of the season. “Oh my gosh, I was sprinting around the bases,” Huff- man said with a grin. “I was so excited. That was my last time on Central’s field, so it was pretty cool.” Huffman was critical to Central’s success during the 2015 season. She set six school records: Career stolen bases (108), career runs scored (122), career hits (158), single sea- son stolen bases (40), single season hits (51) and single sea- son runs scored (46). She also tied the school mark for most triples in a single season (five). Huffman proved she could affect the game in a number of ways, making her the Itemizer-Observer’s softball Player of the Year. OREGON HIGH SCHOOL EQUESTRIAN TEAM Silver to help lead Perrydale to state Pirates to enter six athletes to compete at the state chamionships By Lukas Eggen The Itemizer-Observer P E R R Y D A L E — Yo u weren’t likely to see Perry- dale senior David Silver lounging around much dur- ing the 2014-15 school year. Silver was a four-sport athlete for the Pirates, play- ing football, basketball and baseball, in addition to com- peting on the Pirates’ Ore- gon State High School Equestrian Team (OHSET). “It’s pretty hard,” Silver said. “You have to be not only willing to do it; you have to make the time to do it. After baseball practice, or basketball or football, dur- ing the OHSET season, I have to come home and have three horses to work. That takes two to two-and- a-half hours to get all three of them worked. After that, you have to make time for homework. I didn’t have a whole lot of relaxation time.” It may have required a large time commitment, but it was well worth the invest- ment. Silver is one of six Perry- dale riders who will compete at the OHSET state champi- onships June 24-27 in Red- mond. And he has high ex- pectations for his four events.
