This is in harmony with the language of the apostle John which says: “And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his dis I ciples which are not written in this 1 book; but these are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20 : 30,31. It is through the written evidence concerning the sayings and doings of Jesus on earth that the sinner is to believe in him and have life through his name. “ So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God/’ says BauL Now seeing that these things are true, what use. have we for any spiritual influence outside of the word of God to go before and prepare then ~ ground J Any theory which comes k / in direct conflict with these plain passages of holy Writ is not true. The theory of hereditary total de pravity which we are combating does this. Therefore it can ngt be true. And as this theory of deprav ity is false, then it follows that the theory of the direct operation of the Holy Spirit, evidently construc ted to meet the demand of such a degree of depravity, is also false. 2. As it respects the salvation of dying infants. While some of the creeds are satisfied to make provision for the elect infants which die, while the rest, are to be. conaigiied to eternal..... . punishment, yet this doctrine is a little too strong for the greater por tion of Christendom. But as all infants are totally depraved and can not enter heaven with this de- pravity, the Holy Spirit must be called in direct from heaven to re generate them and save them! Here the Holy Spirit does all the work of salvation, for every body knows that the word of God can have nothing to do with regenerating in fants. If they would only baptize these infants for the destruction of this depravity, there would be some more show of sense in infant bap tism ; but this thoy will not allow. They will have the Spirit to save all the dying ones; and they will sprinkle the living ones for— noth ing ! If we are asked how infants are to be saved, we answer : In the first place we do not believe they are totally depraved. The Scriptures nowhere assert it. In the second place, the word regeneration, prop erly understood, is no more appli cable to infants than it is to the stones beneath our feet. Rational 9 * « A- I
