In tbo good timo that is coming— of equal gnffragc and of equal rights in all the avocations of life, the time that shall mark tho abolition >f discrimina tion because of sex— The Saturday Re view w ill be remembered as one of the chief opponents of liberality and jus tice. Whenever or wherever it can utter a slur upon women, the falsehood and tho insult have gone forth. Uufortn- nmely its chief mouthpiece is a woman— a woman so sour aud hard that one wonders mnch at the fate ami experi ence that could so have imbittered her judgment that she is incapable of lieing even fair upon the simplest question where the interests of other women are involved. The world of working women has in her a pronounced enemy, for she believes that all women should remain •t homo aud be protected, whether they have a home or not, and even where there is no one w illing to assume the burden of the protection. The latest diatribe from The Saturday Review against tbo hated sex is a charge that women are incapable of friendship or •ven good w ill toward each other; that they w ill betray confidence without re gret, break faith with impunity and qnarrel O'er a pirated bonnet t t an alienated lover. It goes for nothing that history can give many noble examples of lasting friendships between women and that there aro other Illustrious examples to be studied in onr own times, while there is no one who cannot recall in his or hcrown ini mediate circle women who have been faithful friends for years, be tween whom the cloud of suspicion has never risen and whom sorrow end ad versify or that still greater test, fortune aud prosperity, could never separate. There is no so called self made woman who cannot name some faithful woman friend wlio held out the helpiug hand just at the right m. n.eut; who opened her doors and received her into the bos- p.taiity of her own home; who sent the timely check that made possible the prlcplr*-'» epportnnity which turned the tide o f fortune. The faithful friendships between w o men wives poverty is a common bond could they be known would revive one’s faith in human nature and its possibili ties of divinity. They divide their all —the crowded room, the leen purse, the unwonted luxury, the few possessions— and with a self abnegation so complete that ono can well believe that life itself wonld be surrendered if it were required. The reul trnth is that women who satirize and misrepresent their own sex know nothing of women. They have proved themselves hostile and treacher ous, aud from such traitors good women turn away instinctively. They know that they have nothing to h o i» for at their hands. It is difficult to understand what could he the motive of writers c f Mrs. Lyun Lynton’s type. Do they seek to curry favor with men? Is it a method of proclaiming tlicir own superiority over a sox which they have endeavored to prove are so manifestly inferior, mor ally, intelleetcally and physically? No one can tell, not even themselves, if they were pressed for an explanation of their motives. They should learn one thing, however. nDd that is that, how ever their power may be limited in oth er directions, womeu are social arbiters. The edict baa gore forth that there is no breach of good breeding more heinous than tho detraction and misrepresenta tion of one woman at the bands of un- other. So if conscience and generosity are no restraint rigorous rules of e-ti- quetto may be. The woman who is a woman 'a worst enemy is no longer the fashion. As a type site is destined to become as obsolete as Lyd a Languish or Clarissa Harlowc.— Mary H. Krout in Chicago Inte:* Ocean. □ 1. » 4 B lit N e t R ed ee m e d . The other forenoon a man appeared at tho snbtreasnry in St. Lonis and present •d a $4 bill of tho old “ continental cur rency” for redemption. Ee hit Bert Farrar, tho paying teller, and nearly paralyzed that person by asking $10,000 in liquidation of the ancient obligation. Ho obtained this result by figuring com pound interest from tho date of issue, 1777, and was displeased when Mr. Farrar suggested that “ 10 cents per 100 pounds" was about the probable value of such stuff. Finding that neither $10,- 000 nor any other sum was fortheom ing, he gathered tip his precious posses sion aud sorrowfully departed Ti e women of this country play a more important part in its banking af fairs than they perhaps realize. They have a large interest iuthe bank capital and figure asemployees, shareholders, di rectors and officers. James H. Eckels, comptroller of the currency, has compiled some interesting figures showiug in part the interest of women in banking. The statistics cover both the national and state banks and were obtained iu response tocircular let- ters of inquiry. According to the .showing, the num ber of bharcsof national hanks is7,099,- 413, representing a total valuation of $688,642,876. O f these women own 1,733,772 shares of a valueof $130,681,- 492. The percentage of shares is 24.4 and of capital 18.9. The number of in dividual women holders of uational bank stock is 70,697. It is rather curious to note that the women apparently have greater confi dence in national than in state banks. The total shares aud capital of the lat- terclassof institutions are 3,618.804 and $307,151,716 respectively. Of this num ber 481,098 shares, representing $38,- 074,712, stand ill the names of women. The percentages are respectively 13.3 and 12.4, aud the individual holders number 23,146. The womeu employees in the national banks of the country are 383 and of the state banks 584 They receive n total compensation from national banks of $185,797, aud from state hanks $262,- 847. The average annual compensation iu the former institutions is $185.11 and in the latter $450.42. Estimating the average dividends from bank stock at 6 per ee,nt, the women of the country for a year would receive an aggregate nnnnul return from their investments in banks of move than $10,000,000. As president of the woman’s board of managers at the Atlanta exposition Mrs. Joseph K. Thompson has appeared iu a new role. Hitherto she has been a social leader, noted for her brilliancy, beauty and wit, lmt since she has been installed in her new position she has shown so mnch executive ability, tact aud talent that even her friends are de lightfully surprised. Those who are woikiug iu conjunction with her say tha; she has the same admirable qual ities wiiich made Mrs. Potter Palmer such a power at the Chicago exposition. Mrs. Thompson is the only daughter of Colonel Minims of Atlanta, and be fore her marriage she was an aclcnowl- f Cornelia Phillips Spencer, who is the I first woman to receive the honor from j that source. The distinction is the well merited re j ward of many years of faithful servioe on Mrs. Spencer's part. Although the university has just celebrated its cen tennial anniversary, it harely existed during the rebellion, and soon after, like Wordsworth's famous Lucy Snow, it “ ceased to be,” hut Mrs. Spencer ! succeeded in arousing enough interest among its ahunnte to reanimate it She has taken a prominent part iu all efforts to increase the efficiency of the university, and some time ago an at- tempt was made to recognize her serv- ices, but the southern feeling was not ready fur such radical action, and it is only lately her friends have seen that I the conferring of a degree is a suitable ! manner of expressing to her their giati- j tude and esteem.— New York Press. 1 She Stood C p F o r H e r F ig h t* . a »IT T tn Mrs. Lee Is woman barber In Chi cago. She heard the other day that the j conncil was going to pass an ordinance prohibiting women from engaging in the occupation of barbering, so when the barbers held a mass meeting she presented herself in behalf of the hun i dred or more women who are to be ' found in Chicago shops. She represent ed that women are forging to the front in the business. “ There is a reason for this,” she said. “ Women barbers do not drink or carouse; consequently their nerves are always steady and their touch is light. They do not chew to | bacco nor smoke cigars, aud always treat their customers with the utmost politeness.” This plain talk created a great uproar, hut Mrs. Lee smiled and sat down, satisfied that she had shown the meeting that womtn can hold their own anywhere.— Chicago Correspond ent j FROM THF R IO O D Br th* kldn*T*.
