There is to be given at Davis’ hall on the night of February 14, 1895, a grand ball under the auspices of the East Cottage Grove Hose Company, No. 1, for the purpose of raising funds to assist in procuring uni forms for its members. The music for this ball will consist of four pieces (violin, piauo, cornet and double ba«s) performed by capable musicians. The floor will be man aged by H. H. Petrie and W. F. Hemenway. The committee on iu- troduction will consist of W. P- Lockwood and Warren AIcFarland. Committee on reception, Erwin Lea and D. H. Heuienway. Door keep er, U. S. Walksr. Excellent music aud a good tin e guaranteed and ev erybody invited. Tickets, including supper, one dollar. Spectators, twenty-five cents. There will also be given in con nection with the ball, a supper giv en under the management of the Hose Company, to be served in Thompson’s ball in East Cottage Grove, the proceeds of which are to go into the same fund. Supper will be served to those who wish to con tribute, at any time after six o’clock p. in., and until 12 o’clock, any one who wishes to contribute in this way, will be served a good meal by at tentive aud obliging waiters for the sum of twenty-five cents. Now, in connection with the above announcement, I wish to call the attention of the citizens of this city to this fact— that there has been or ganized a hose-team consisting of twenty members, nud as is stated above, we are making an effort to get uniforms so that we may appear in proper style when we wish to do so. We are a volunteer company, and have signed or subscribed to very- strict lawE, or rulings which bind us strictly to our duty as firemen and, which we must obey or suffer the imposemeut of a fine—or more, we are paid no salary aud we must act, and promptly too, wbenever there is a call for our services. At any hour of the night or day, no matter bow important is the business which oc cupies our time, we must drop it aud go 1,0 the duty and dangerous work that falls to the lot of a fire man. It matters not whether we are dressed in our best, or our working clothes, asleep or awake, or enjoy ing the company of our best girl, or making a trade that would result to money in our pockets. AVhenever there is a call for our services we must go, and are not allowed even time to make a change in our cloth ing; we must go as we are, at the time duty calls us, and no delay, to a work which is not only disagreea ble but dangerous to health and life, to say nothing of the spoiling of wearing apparel Ac. And, do our utmost to save life and property from loss by fire. AVe are sworn to do all this to the best of our ability by the laws of our department. Ami, for this, we ask no compensation— we have volunt« ered our services to the city whicu will undoubtedly show us due appreciation and take pride in assisting us in our effort to raise the necessary money with which to buy uniforms, so that when we wish to practice or appear on parade we will present a noticeable and respectful r.ppearance which be comes thigylive and thriving city of ours. I t «¿'¿¿e duty of every citizen who has^ij^pfrty at stake to take a lively interest and pride in the fire lepartment of this city, and I be lieve you will all assist with alacrity and open purses, without further urging. Nevertheless, you will all have an opportunity to soon. Those who wish to trip the light fantastic toe will be assured a delightful lance and good supper for the small sum of one dollar. Those who do not wish to participate in the dance ean come in and enjoy the music and look on the dance, by paying the spectation fee of twenty-five cents. Aud those whose principles are in opposition to dancing or attending dances, can at least spend a quarter >f a dollar and get a good supper iu return. All can contribute in one way or the other, and all contribu tions will be thankfully received. Very respectfully H. H. P etrie , On Committee of arrangements.
