W i ll sour the sweetest disposition and transform the mast even tempered, lov able nature into a cross-grained and irritable individual. If impatience or fault-finding am ever excusable it is when the body is tortured by an eating and painful sore. It is truly discouraging to find after tha of diligent and faithful use of external remedies that the place ains as defiant, an gry and offensive as ever. Every chronic sore, no ter on what part of the body it comes, is an evidence of some previous stitutional or organic trouble, and that the dregs of these diseases ain in the system ; or, it may be that gome long hidden poison— perhaps cer— has come to the surface and begun its destructive work. N OLD SORE It Is nn Interesting fact that the old University o f Heidelberg has within recent years taken the lend of all other centers o f astronomical observation in the discovery o f asteroids, or minor planets. O f the thirty-six new aste roids found in 1901, all but one were discovered nt Heidelberg. The photo graphic plate has entirely superseded the human eye in these discoveries. This fact is mainly due to the extreme faintness o f the asteroids that are now being picked up. I)r. Bauschinger esti mates that very fe w o f these bodies brighter than the tenth magnitude re main to be discovered, but the number o f fainter ones shows no signs o f ex haustion. A novel experiment lately shown the London Royal Society by T. C. Porter was performed with a little water In a beaker having nearly vertical sides. When the water was rotated about a vertical axis, the pressure was ienst in the center and Increased outward, and when near boiling point and heat was applied, steam formed only In the region o f least pressure producing a gaseous core. The rotation was set up by stirring with a rubber-covered glass rod. Curious phenomena w ere shown by the column o f steam when the w a ter was first stirred mid allowed to come to rest w hile still being heated, the water at first having a concave surface and the core of steam being practically continuous from bottom to top. This was follow ed by a stage o f perplexing pulsations. Some forms of the steam columns resembled solnr prominences, and it was suggested that the latter might be due to diminished 1 pressure near the center o f cyeloues in the sun’s atmosphere. S h e C o u ld E x p la in th e “ T h r i l l . " ’ “ A h !” sighed the dreamy poet, “ what pence, what restfulness there is here In I the placid solitudes, communing with nature. Do you not also find that many things come to you unsought—that you consciously realize that something has touched you supremely—that some In visible power has thrilled you unspeak ably ?” “ W hy, I don’t know.” answered the young woman, with a nervous start, “ but I did think I fe lt a mosquito a minute ago.’’—Detroit Free Press.
