Oct 7 . —The follow­
ing announcement was made from
the White House this afternoon: On
Monday Hon Carroll Wright, com­
missioner of lador went to Philadel­
phia and gave John Mitchell the
following from the President: If
Mr Mitchell will secure the immed­
iate return to work of the miners,
the President will immediately ap­
point a commission to thoroughly
investigate all matters at issue, and
do all in his power to obtain a settle­
ment of the questions, in accordance
with the report of the commission.
Mitchell has taken the matter
under crnsidtration, but the Presi­
dent has not yet been advised of any
decision.

Taxes became deliquent on Mon­
day, October 6th, and hereafter
those who did not pay before that
date will be levied upon and tbo
cost of tho levy will be added to the
penalty already attached under tho
new law.
The amount of Laue county taxe3
which became delinquent on Mon­
day, according to the figures in
the sheriff's office, is $7,481.42,
which is a very large delinquent,
more than for any year in several
years past.
The only way of accounting for
this large delinquency is that tho
new luw is unsatisfactory or is mis­
understood.

railway companies have been trying
to obey the order of the Mayor and
run their street car under the pro^
tection of the militia.
The situation is desperate. Bloody
battles have been fought at inter­
vals all the forenoon between the
mob and militia. Many have be.n
killed and wounded.
More serious trouble is feared to­
night aH the strikers are wild with
rage and are beiDg joined by the
disorderly element.

Murphy, the fireman on the prison
engine at the state penitautiary ad­
jacent this city, made his escape
from the penitentiary grounds on
the engiuo this forenoon. The
prison guards firod about a hund­
red shots at the escaping convict,
without effect it is thought.
Murphy left the engine at Alder
Creek and took to the woods. A
posse is in pursuit.

o’clock this afternoon, after hurried
preparations, President Mitchell and
three district Presidents rushed off
to New York. Shortly after 2 o’clock
President Mitchell roceivod a telo-
gram from Now York which immedi­
ately changed his plans. He hastily
summoned tha District Presidents
with an evident air of jubilation.
He refused to say anything. It has
been learned on what seems to be
good authority that the message
was from a prominent coal operator
and it is believed Mitchell and his
colleagues will be asked to name
terms for settling the strike. The
iarty will reach New York at 9
o’clock tonight,

The good road’s Convention will
be held in Portland October 14 ann
15th. The S P Co have made a re­
duced rate of one and one-third
fare for tho round trip and a large
body of people who are interested in
tbo good roads movemeut are ex­
pected to attend. Considerable
interest has lately been manifested
in this movement and some profit-
table results are looked for.
