A sh l a n d , Aug 9.— A most shock­
ing accident took place at Klamatli-
ton, south of here yesterday ovening,
resulting in the death of two child­
ren, Lester and Emery Davis, aged
(> and 3 years. They were the
children of Mrs Laura M Davis, who
conducts a millinery store there. The
two children were playing in the
yard in the rear of their home with
some parlor matches, and close by
was a 5 gallon can of coal oil. In
some way the can become ignited,
exploded nnd covered the little ones
with a blaze of fire. With their
c lo s in g aflame they started to run
for the Klamath river which is near
by but one fell nnd its outcryes
brought assistance. An attempt was
made to smother the flumes and the
burning clothiQg was taken from the
perrons of the little ones but tho
flames had already performed their
deadly work and after lingering in
great r.gouy, both died at 7 :30
o ’ clock.

When the Sheriff Gardner and
his posse arrived at Davenport
Thursday with the outlaw’s remains
the whole town went wild.
‘•Hurrah for Lincoln County,” was
the cry, and it was with great dif­
ficult that the crowds were forced
back enough to admit the passage
of the body into the morgue.
Insistent demands to see the re­
mains were made by the excited
people, and after a time many were
admitted. Then the trouble started.
Relic hunters were everywhere, and
within ten minntes the corpse was
almost entirely stripped. His clothes
were cut off, the bloody cloth with
which he had tried to staunch his
wounds and the strap he had used
as a ligature were all carried away
and even the head of the dead mur­
dered was almost entirely shorn of
hair.
Great iudignatiun has been ex­
pressed over the occurrence, and it
is not unlikely that many prosecut­
ions will follow.

PORTLAND CARNIVAL OPEN­
ING DAY.
Opening day of the Portland Elks’
Carnival will be made memorable
by the mammoth parade through
the streets headed by the queen
and her court, with maid of honor,
courtiers, ministers, heralds, pages
and subjects iu attendance, followed
floats and the Jabour Oriental show.
In this section of the great parade
will be 14 cages of wild and per­
forming animals, elephants, camels,
troops of mounted Arabs, dogs and
ponies, Orienial performers from far
Eastern countries, including Turks,
Arabians, Syriana, Egyptians, Bed-
ouius Hindoos, Cingalese, Russians,
Japanese, Mexicans and many others
The Elks will turn out iu large
numbers and Portland will look gay
with this great pageant moving
through the streets on the inaugural
day of the carnival.

Medford Farmer Killed During
a Heavy Thunder Storm.

heavy storm here this evening Rich­
ard Paine, a farmer, living about
two miles south of Medford, was
killed by lightning. He was a
member of the Woodman of the
World, and left a wife. Further
details cannot be leanred on account
of the telephone having been dis­
