June 15.— Adding the theft of another team to their alroady long list of crimes, Tracy and Merrill, the desperate outlaws, bo tween Friday evoning and tonight made their way through Clackamas County, across Multnomah from tho Clackamas line to a point opposite Fisher's Landing, crossed tho Columbia, and now, just a week from the time of their escape from the Peniteutiary at Salem, aro in the neighborhood of Fourth Plain, Claik County, Washington, with another posse on their track, another Sherff in charge of it, and three detectives from Portland aa roin forcements. As it was in the beginning, it is now; they will either be captured or killed, or make their escapo. Morrill is now on ground with which he is thoroughly fmiliar, having been born in Clark County and brought up in Cowlitz, and thus better situated than while in Oregon. The country is much the same formed of low-lying hills, cut by ravinos, and overgrown with un derbrush and scrub firs which afford the best kind of cover. As the men are armed with 30-30 rifles and have an abundance of ammunition, it does not seem likely that the desire to capture them will burn any more V ancouver , set of pursuers than it did in those of the posse that laid down its arms and gave up tho fight at Barlow Friday afternoon. During the passage of the river both men becamo loquacious, Merrill in particular talking a great deal. IIo appeared to bo thorough ly hardened and expressed himself as being sorry he had not killed Sheriff Durbin in the woods near Gervais when he had the oppor tunity. Why,” he snid, “ when they had those hounds on our trail in tho bush we were lying not 50 feet away behind some logs. I saw Durbin at the bead of the crowd and wanted to kill him, but Tracy said, ‘Now, pal don’t shoot; if you let off that gun we’ll have our finish right here.’ I was just going to kill the------------ just the same when they called off the dogs and went back, and I’ ve been sorry ever since that I didn’ t finish him when I had the chance.’’ Vancouver is Meraill’s old home. Wash, Juno 17.__At 2 o ’clock this morning a most ex citing event occurod, which Bhowcd that Tracy and Merrill, if run into a corner, will make a desperato fight for life. They are evidently determined not to be taken, if pos sible to escape, and if the inevitable should finally come to pass to soli their lives as dearly as possible At the hour named, Burt Biesieck- or and Frnnk Davis were on guard on tho bridge across Salmon Creek near tho place where Tracy and Merrill were believed to be in hiding and over which the military road passes. Suddenly the two convict* appeared. As the escapes swung into range, four guns were raised and four men bognn to blaze way. Several volleys wore thus exchanged Biesieker was slightly wounded through tho shouldor. Whether any of tho shots fired by Biesiecker and Davis took effect it is impossible to say. Tracy and Merrill with drew speedily to cover. Guard Carson has heen dispatch ed for tho bloodhounds, and the fight will be kopt up, for tho deter mination on the oue side to capture and ou the other to get away i* stronger now than over.
