of J J Walton. A standing vote
was taken with the result that
Walton was chosen over Skipworth
by a vote of 50 to 45.

of Cottage Grove for secretary and

THE PLATFORM
WTe tho delegates of tho Demo­
cratic party of the County of Lane,
in convention assembled, do hereby
declare the administration of the
State Government to bo in urgent
need of immediate reform; do here
bv enjoin upon tho nominees, for the
legislature, a zealous effort and co
operation to this end; and do hereby
appeal to our fellow citizens of every
formor [ o ’.itical connection to under­
take with us this first and most
pressing patriotic duty.
Resolved, that we are in favor of
putting all State officers on a fixed
salary, and that all fees earned by
any State office be turned into the
trciftury for the benefit of the
people.
Resolved, that we favor a law re­
ducing railroad fares in this state to
three cents per mile.
Resolved, that we arraign and do
nounce the last legislature for its ex
trnvagancc and profligate waste of
the people’ s money, thereby largely
increasing the public burdens, and
tending to corrupt the public morals.
Resolved, that we favor the pas­
sage by Congress, of the bill known
as the Mitchell Kahn Chines ex­
clusion bill.

Resolved, that wo are opposed,
and denounce the principle of
government
subsidies, and
we
especially denounce and oppose tho

Ship-Subsidy bill recently passed by
the United States Senate.
Resolved, that private monopolies
are indefensible and intolerable.
They destroy competition, control
the price of raw material and of the
finished product, thus robbing both
producer and consumer. They
lessen the employment of labor and
arbitrarily fix the terms and con­
ditions thereof; and deprive in
dividual energy and sm all capital of
their opportunity for betterment.
Tarriff laws should be amended by
putting the products of trusts on
the free list, to prevent monopoly
under the plea of protection. That
all tarriff taxes should be levied for
the purpose of revenue only.
Resolved that the democratio
party is now, as it always has been
tho party of the common people, be­
lieving always in the principles of
equality before the law and special
privilages to none.
That governments nro instituted
among men to promote the general
welfare and not for the benefit of
the fow and for the promotion
of cabalistic ends and private
benefits.
We confidentally appeal to the
people of Lane county to entrust the
administration of their public affairs
