C O A U r; t **« om w o THE OLDEST In the “ History of Nineveh and Its Palaces,** by Joseph Honomi, we find a description of perhaps the oldest lock ever discovered, says Hardware. It was used in securing the gates in one of the palaces o f Khorsebad. In de- aeribing thp> ancient piece of hard ware, if such terms may be applied to wooden locks, he says: “ At the end of the chamber, just behind the first bulls, was formerly a strong gate o f one leaf, which w fastened by a large wooden lock, like those still used in the east, o f which the key is as much as a man eon con vejien tly carry, and by a bar which moved into a square hole iu the wall. "It is to a key o f this description that the prophet probably alludes: •Ami the key of the house o f David will 1 lay upon his shoulder,’ and it is remarkable that the word for key in tliis pu >age o f Scripture, ‘ muftah is the same in use all over the east at the present time. The key of an ordinary street door is commonly thirteen or fourteen inches long and the key of th. gate o f a public building or o f a street or o f a quarter o f 9 town Is two feet or more in length. “ The iron pegs at one end of the piece < >f wood correspond to so many hole-a in the wooden bar or bolt o f the lock, which when the door or gate is shut cannot be opened until the key has been inserted and the impediment to the drawing buck of the bolt re moved by raising up so many iron pins that fall down into hole6 in tha bar or bolt corresponding to the peg In the k e y /’ This description and others o f a cor roboratory character prove that this form of lock and key was m use in Kgypt four or five thousand years, dur ing which extended period o f time it floes not appear to have undergone any successful change. —Mendelssohn began to compose in his twelfth year, and so methodical were his habits even then that the m anuscript volum es con tain in g his own Bcores of his works are in an unbroken series until his d?ath. There are forty-four o f these great volumes, all written by his own hand and now pre served. in the im perial library in Berlin. I? a disc-re o f civilization.
