Three men were left to guard the boat, and the others with the Chief, followed Sho Mai toward the mouth of the cave. She led them not by tbe most direct path, but chose a way which le i by tho pool and the gorge, but did not permit of decent to them. Following this they were soon deep in the cave’ s shadows, and to them ns to her, when she had first been cast iuto this place came the horrible voices of the giants miugled with tho rush of the waves. The sailors, though their hearts were stout enough upon tho sea, were terrified at these sounds, and it required all the Chief’s authority to urge them forward. The wind drawing in gusts through the pas sages of the great cave beat down tho flames of the torches that they gave little light. At length Sho Mai led them to tbe terrace below which the twin giants rolled in their endless courses. The waves must have driven the trensnre thoro said Sho Mai pointing downward, A ll the sailors pressed forward to the brink avarice for a moment beating down their fenrB but when in the gray gleam of the phosphorescence they saw the dim shapes hurrying to and fro, they broke into a chorus of frightened cries, nnd rushod wildy hack toward tho entrance, flinging away their torches nnd shrieking as they fled that the demons wore in pursuit of them. Sho Mai and the ohief were left alone by the fearful chasm. The girl looked at him aud saw that the hand in which he held the torclio trembled with fear, wns haggard and drawn with foar and as she gazed at him Sho Mai thought of his bravado in tho presence of tho helpless captives he had numbered; she re membered his blood-thirstinoBS ’and his crimes, she recalled his wicked boasting and contrasted it with the cowardice which was now made manifest. And she loathed and hated this mau with a detestation which no other human being had ever awakened in her breast. His wretched lifo alone now stood be tween her and freedom. Dost thou believe in the demons of tho cave? she said recalling tho cruel question which he had asked of those who were slain by his command on board the pirate junk. Dost thou believe in the demons of this cave? she repeated bending toward him. Yes, yes, he falterod while his knees knocked together. Then go to them! she shrieked aud pushed him from the brink. He fell in with a wild and terrible cry, nnd as ho crashed down upon the rocky floor one of tho giants enmo thundering along his pathway and crushed the wretch in his awful embrace. Filled with horror at this sight Sho Mai fled up tho steep stairways of tho cave affright ed but when she came under the clear sky once more, aud stood upon tho tall cliff whore the free air fan ned her face the grcnl joy of liberty came to her with so delicious a thrill that every gloomy thought vanished from her mind.
