In early days— before the codlin moth— Willamette valley apples held the reputation all over the coast. Now the high and cold country east o f the Cascade moun tains is far in the lead, not perhaps because o f better fruit, but through neglect o f old valley orchards and failure to set out new ones to any considerable extent, the large plant- jug o f prunes no doubt being re sponsible in a great degree for over looking the more reliable apples. M. Ishaut, station agent at Mayfield Clothing Among the scientific notes in Collier’s for October 15 is the following announcement: A new way o f prospecting has been tried experimentally, and is reaching the point where it is practi cally useful. The method is based on the difference in the electrical conductivity in the earth ¿lue to the presence of ore deposits. Most ores are much better conductors o f electricity than the soil and rock, although some othera are almost insulators. In making use o f thea facts to locate beds o f ore two electrodes are grounded about 100 yards apart. In the circuit is an induction coil with a glass condenser and two spark gaps. T he current as it passes through the ground is tested bv two telephone receivers connec ted to portable electrodes which are usually grounded about 70 feet apart. The make and break of the c, 11 rent in passing through the ground is heard in the telephone as ticks. As the electrodes attached to the telephones are moving about, the variations in tbe intensity o f tbe tapping in the telephones gives an indication o f the presence and position o f the ore deposits. A l though tbe method is not out o f the experimental stage, yet it seems to promise much for itself in the future. 3 * 7 .» » L» SHUTS» 3.2 CT'KKLN 3.56 7.33 5. l'É KK O m T u im i LUS T.5S1 «-3 II AKK I! 3IH S.W 7.T UOIIENA I H l H S3 Hhl> III» E 3.17 S i ; 3.5 «1KAVEI.
