Competition is the life of trade and the death of the nonadvertiser. Aggressive work in evaugelizing is to be begun at once.and is to be carried forward diligently in all the churches of the denomination in the state. Editor J. C. Roberts of the Myrtle Point Enterprise, is a very chivalrous young man ami recently after taking observations about town he retired to his sanctum and i>enned this editorial paragraph: “ Ladies in this town raise their skirts while walking, und ii’» all right as far as we can see.” Vacation Is over and the famiiiur sound of the school bell is heard throughout the land. The ¡boys and girls seen wending their way to school with arms full of books and happy smiling faces, are the men and women of the future, and upon whose shoulders will soon rest the future affairs of stute, and It is essential that they be encournged to obtnin the best education possible. Cottage Grove Is rapidly gaining a reputation for having the dirtiest streets of any town In the county, and the fact that it has no sewerage is taken as positive evidence that the place is unhealthy. Every day we read overdrawn paraitraphs like the following, which can but soon work an injury to the town. The Myrtle Point Enterprise saya: "Cottage Grove Is in such a dirty condition or the water supply is contaminated by filth to such an extent that the public schools were closed, owing to an epi demic of diphtheria.” Our friend is not conversant with the conditions in Cottage Grove, or else be would not connect our water supply In any way With the recent deplorable circum stance of the schools having to close fora couple of weeks. The conditions in this city, from a sanitary point of view, certainly are not good, and the future prosperity of the town and the health of the present population de mand that a system of sewerage be put in operation as soon as the coun oil can have the work done. But our water supply is our pride, as it comes from away up in the mountains And is as pure as the nectar of the gods. Cresw ell Item s. Their friends gathered at the depot and gave them a shower of rice with their best wishes. Mrs. Hattie Yancey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Sears, gave birth to twins on Saturday, a boy and a girl. Purvine died at the resi dence of his mother, Mrs. Minnie Davis on Monday morning after a * short illness with brain fever, and was buried in the Howe cemetery on Tuesday. Vaughn, died at her new home in this city Thursday, October 8th, 1903, after a prolonged illuess, resulting from stomache dis orders and consumption. She was a daughter of squire J. W . Vaughn and was born near the site of the old Vaughn flour mill two miles east of this citv on Row river, Jan uary 1, 18G2. She was united in marriage to Henry Rissue February 1, 1880, eight children having been horn to this union, 2 daughters and (I sons, the father and sons surviving. Mrs. Rissue belonged to a highly esteemed pioneer family, her mother however, having died several years ago. Besides members of her own family, a father, four brothers and four sisters and a large circle of friends are left to mourn their loss. The fuueral services were conducted at the Sears Cemetery Oct, 9th, by Rev. Billington, at the close of which the remains were laid to their final repose amid the sorrow of a large concourse of relatives and friends. The bereaved family has the heart felt sympathy o f all. Geo. Hawley and wife are visiting relatives in Eastern Oregon. Miss Etta Shaub came up from Coburg to attend the wedding of her cousin V irgie Shaub to Charles Townsend. Jas. Parker of Eugene, came up Sunday to attend the Townsend and Sbaub wedding. A. B. Page and Frank Sly have gone to Scottsburg on a fishing trip. Frank M iller left for his home at Prineville on Monday. Wm. M iller and family who have made their home here for some raontliB have moved to Eugene. Dalton Robinette departed for Springfield on Sunday where be has secured employment.
