M artin, whose iti lor children were w id ely known, drad. Mi* was a cousin c f Samuel , Cemens and Col. H enry Matter- Manufactured la and More Imported. T h ere la one article of manufacture that is used so extensively in the t!nl. ted States that no one hae an Idea of the annual quantity consumed, namely wooden toothpicks. According l0 ail expert, the number la simply Incalcul able. Af lldoua upou mlllluus of the tiny wooden silvers are turned out every year from American fnctoriea alone, and on top of this tremendous output come Im portation from Portugal and Japan and other countries nearly as la ig e as the domestic product. Moat o f the American toothplcki, ac cording to the New York Times, come from Franklin Couuty, In Maine, near the forest home o f the white blrcb, out o f which 05 per cent of the domestic toothpicks are made. This wood Is soft and pliable and of admirable resistance for the purpose for which It la used. W hole mills In Maine are devoted to supplying the country with toothpicks, and in the industry la to be found some o f the finest and moat intricate of ma chinery, Bo tremendous is the output o f these machines that In a brief sea son. duriug the spring, enough tooth picks can he made to supply the mar kets o f the entire country for the year to come. Tha M illio n * A further Idea of the capacity o f the machines may be had from the fact that only 100 men are necessary to operate and run all the mills in Kranklln Coun ty. Other mills of this kind are scat tered throughout Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and western New York, but the real home o f the toothpick ia Maine. W h ite birch is not the ouly wood used for the domestic toothpick: maple and poplar are employed as well, but birch has the property o f retaining its forest odor and sweetness. The felling o f toothpick trees la only Incidental to the regular lumber work o f the Maine foresters. No especial men are sent but to hunt up suitable trees. But whenever the feremnn of a gang o f woodsmen comes across s tree especially adapted to tootbplcka be or ders It felled and laid aside. The branches o f the tree are then trimmed and only the trunk Itself Is transported to the mills. There the bark Is skinned and the naked trunk is run through a machine which severs It Into veneers. "Veneers” Is the technical expression for thin strips of wood no thicker than a piece o f blottiug paper and no wider than the leugtb o f a toothpick. Once the trunk has been cut into these sheets o f wood, ouly one process remains to turn out the toothpicks fit for packing and shipping to market. The veneers are fed Into a second machine supplied with sharp, rotary knives that whirl at tremendous high speed, sulpplug the veneers Into toothpicks at the rate of hundreds o f tbouaauds an hour. It la only the »o-ealled "fa n c y " tooth pick that Is not made in this country. In Portugal, from where most of the orangewood picks are Imported, the sticks are sharpened by young girls who. In return for turning out "picks" •harp as needles and smooth as Ivory, are paid 3 cents a day. T h e Japanese toothpicks are made of fine reeds, and are distinct from Ihoac •ent to thla country by the Portuguese manufacturers. A Japanese toothpick Is delicate and thin as tissue paper, and nevertheless strong and pliable. The Japnnese toothpick-maker earns even less than bla Portuguese fellow crafts man, bis remuneration being a fraction more than 2 cents a day. In short, a thousand toothpicks may be bought In Japan for as much ns It coats to pack and box 5,000 o f American make.
