Money is subscribed freely to
support commercial clubs and
promotion organizations in most
o f the valley towns, but who ever
heard o f any special effort o f any
kind being put forth to assist the
home papers in boosting continu­
ally for their communities by
sending out papers every week
to all who apply for them that
they may learn something about
the town and country wherein
the paper is published. There is
not a week, but what this office
sends out to these applicants from
two to ten extra copies o f the
Leader free and postage prepaid
in order to interest and bring
some more worthy home builders
or investors to this community,
and it is no uncommon thing
for a stranger to walk’Jinto our
office and approach us with the
remark, “ well, I have been read­
ing the Leader back in Kansas
and here I am .” In this work
we are, at our own labor and ex­
pense, making business for the
local real estate dealers, for the
hardware dealers, for the furni­
ture stores, the grocers, clothers
and hotels, many o f whom do not
reciprocate with so much as a
year’ s subscription to the home
paper, to say nothing o f running
a good advertisement therein,
which invariably brings good re­
turns on the amount o f money in­
vested. It isn’t often that we
complain, but when we observe
constantly what other valley
towns are doing for their home
papers in the way o f liberal ad­
vertising patronage, we can’t
keep the question from arising
in our mind, “ What is the mat­
ter with Cottage Grove?”
When the frost is on the roses,
and the water pipes are froze;
when the little icy needles come
with every wind that blows;
when chilblains make us scratch,
and cold feet give us pain; then
it is we wish for the Oregon mist
again. We may fret and frown
around at the dampness o f our
clothes, but the mist beats Jack
Frost every time, as everybody
knows. For it’s different in Ore­
gon when the pipes are full o f
ice, and the thermometer is act­
ing anything but nice. Then we
talk about our climate; about the
summer, spring and fall, but the
misty days in winter are the ones
that suit us all, truthfully sings
the web-footed editor o f the
Brownsville Times.
