The family had attended the Christian Sunday School picnic that day and upon returning to their home about one mile west o f Cottage Grove in the evening, Mr. Dorward who has a contract for the delivery of a lot o f cord wood to Dave Sterling o f this city, decided to go up in the woods near by and bring out a load of wood to his home that he might get an early start to town with it the next morning. He was ac companied by his two little sons, Donald and Franklin, the former walking and the latter riding in the wagon seat with the father, as they came out o f the timber with a load of wood down a hill slope. When nearing the foot of the slope, Donald ran ahead o f the team to open a gate, when Mr. Dorward while working with the brake, which did not work well, allowed the team to leave the road slightly, one front wheel coming in contact with a small stump by the roadside, the jar from which threw the wagon seat, upon which the father and s6n were riding, to the ground. Little Franklin fell directly before one o f the front wheels which passed over his head, crushing it and killing him instantly. The father was caught by one hind wheel which passed over his leg between the knee and ankle fearfully frac turing and crushing it, from the fact that a deep rut was directly under his leg when the wheel passed over i t The team contin ued on down the road to the gate where it stopped. In the mean time, the older son, Donald, ran speedily to the home a quarter o f a mile distant and notified his mother and neighbors o f the ac cident, and the mother, Mr. Handy, Mr. Metcalf and others were soon upon the scene. Temporary splints were pre pared and applied to Mr. Dor- ward’s broken limb by Mr. John Metcalf and the unfortunate father and child were removed to their home and physicians were summoned who are doing all in their power to save the broken limb from amputation, but whether or not they will be successful remains to be seen, as the fracture is a most serious one we are informed by Dr. A. W. Kime. The funeral services and burial o f the remains of the unfortunate little boy were conducted today at 2:30 o’clock p. m. and were largely attended, interment in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. The grief stricken family has the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
