The poet laureate o f England has no
specific duties, the honor being con­
ferred upon him for his past work in
this form o f literature. H e is not sup­
posed to write at the king's commund,
but use bis own pleasure in the mat­
ter. The emoluments o f the poet have
varied. When the title o f poet lau­
reate was conferred by letters patent
on Drydeu in 1070 it was coupled with
a pension of $1,500 and a butt of Ca­
nary wine. Tennyson drew $300 a
year from the lord chamberlain's de­
partment aud $135 from the lord stew­
ard's in lieu o f the “ butt o f sack.”
