OF BOOSTING Figures W on’t Lie Why do people emigrate from one country or state to an other? Why are new countries settled, and why one section faster than another? Why does one town grow faster than another with equal chances and inducements to offer to the settler? J The booster will tell you that, everything else being equal, the town and country whose citizens boost, will out strip the dead ones, and the booster has the right solution. Do the figures prove that the people o f Oregon are too conservative? L et us see! The best way to answer the question is by comparing Oregon and Oregon’s growth and development with a neigh boring state and a neighboring state’s advancement and growth. The Importance of exterminating the winter fly Is apparent It Is something that the Individual house keeper must do Be sure to kill the flrst flies of the season Don't let one escape, ns every fly killed In early spring means billions less of the pest this summer. Oregon has 94,500 square miles o f land, while Washing ton has but 66,880 square miles. Oregon was made a state in February, 1859, Washington did not become a state until November, 1889— more than thirty years later. In 1870 Oregon had 174,786 people, while Washington had but 75,116. In 1890 Oregon had a population o f 313,767; at that time Washington had 349,390. Ten years later Ore gon had 413,536, while Washington had 518,103 people, and in 1910 Oregon only had 672,768, while W ashington’s popula tion had increased to 1,141,990, making a growth o f 48.3 per cent from 1890 to 1900 and from 1900 to 1919 an increase o f 120.4 per cent, while Oregon was increasing 31.8 and 62.7 per cent respectively. In 1900 the average population per square mile in Oregon was 4.4, while Washington had 7.7. In 1910 Oregon’ s popu lation was 7 per square mile, while Washington had 17.1. In 1890 Oregon’s chief city had a population o f 46,385, while Washington’ s big town only had 42,837. In 1910 Port land had grown to 207,214, while the Washington metropolis had 273,193 people. From 1900 to 1910, while Oregon was increasing 259,220 in population, Washington added 623,817. Oregon had in 1910 one city o f over 100,000; one more o f over 10,000; five more with over 5,000 each; eight more with over 3,000; thirty-two more with over 1,000, and 289 towns and cities with a population o f over 100 each. A t the last census Washington had tw o cities with over 100,000 population, and one with over 75,000; tw o with over 20,000; one with over 15,000; two with over 10,000; four with over 5,000; 11 with over 3,000; forty-nine with over 1,000, and 471 cities and towns with more than 100 population. Oregon had thirty years the start o f Washington. Ore gon has more land, as good soil, as fine a climate, as much timber, as much mineral, as much o f everything necessary to the health, happiness and prosperity o f a great population as her neighboring state, and yet that state is outgrowing Ore gon at a rate o f more than 5.6 per cent every year. These figures do not lie, and there must be a reason for this difference in the advancement o f tw o states, where, if there be any difference, the advantage is with the Heaver State. Who on the Pacific Coast has not heard o f the “ Seattle Spirit?” It is a spirit o f “ Get Together, Stay Together, Work Together.” It is a spirit o f pride in home- the home town, the home county, the home state the real, simon pure patriotism. It is a spirit that boosts through seasons o f dull business and cloudy skies, just as hard or a little harder than when the sun is shining. It is the spirit that goes out and gets; that overcomes obstacles; that does not hesitate to spend all o f the profits o f today to build bigger and better tomorrow. It is enthusiasm concentrated, boiled down, double-distilled, And it will win over the caution o f conservatism seven days in the week and fifty-tw o weeks in the year. Oregon is accused e f being too conservative in the matter o f going out after the thing she needs most to make her a great and grand commonwealth a large, intelligent, pro gressive population, and somehow the figures convict her. N o w if it will not help your business to advertise that your goods are clean, fresh, well made, reasonably priced, etc., it can not hurt it to tell the people that your butter is strong, your eggs stale, your meat diseased, your manufactured goods shoddy and cheap. Hut if this paper should say these things about your business (and they might lie said as truthfully as many tilings that arc written into advertisements) w hat a roar you would make! Then again, since you do not believe in advertising, you could not reasonably object to the Leader encouraging men in your line of busi ness, who will advertise, to come here and make a try for the increased business that proper adver tising will bring to and hold for Cottage Grove.
