As it appears that there is a gen­
eral awakening of interest in the
raising of berries, the best food oil
earth, we give the following from
an exchange which should be read
with interest. Owing to the long
strawberry season in the Willam­
ette valey, in fact all over western
Oregon, those who do not live near
enough to a good sized city that
would insure them a market for
the whole season while fresh, and
who could not afford to go into the
canning business may find relief
in the drying process with good
profit, 'file clipping reads as fol­
lows:
“ Dried strawberries is a new
crop soon to become of commercial
importance in many Western states,
according to reports made to the
Department of Commerce and bail­
or. A berry grower of the state of
Washington has discovered a sun­
drying process for strawberries
which has proved entirely success­
ful, and samples of the dried pro­
duct received in Washington ap­
pear to bear out the statement that
within a few years many sections
cf the West, heretofore depending
on the profits from strawberries
which could only be shipped in
season, will benefit from being able
to dry this fruit in large quantities
and realize satisfactory results.”
The answer to “ What is Suc­
cess?” was given by a Kansas City
woman in the following words:
“ lie has achieved success who
has lived well, laughed often and
loved much: who has gained the
respect of intelligent men and the
love of little children; who has fill­
ed his niche and accomplished his
task; who has left the world better
than he found it, whether by an
improved poppy, a perfect poem or
a rescued soul; who has never
lacked appreciation o f earth’s
beauty or failed to express it; who
has always looked for the best in
others and gave the best he had.”
The Great Western Sugar Com­
pany of Deliver, Colorado, is offer­
ing a prize of $10,(XXI to the invent­
er of a practicable sugar beet
puller and topper to meet the de­
mands of a committee of judges of
that company. The device must
not require more than four horses
to the row of beets, and must pull
and top them, separating the roots
and tops, leaving them convenient
to load. It must not damage neith­
er the beets nor tops and must not
cost to exceed $.100.
Senator Chamberlain has our
thanks for public documents in­
cluding a bulletin from the census
bureau on the state of Oregon
which contains much useful in­
formation concerning our state.
This bulletin shows that Oregon’s
incease in population during the
last census decade to lie 259,229 or
62.7 per cent. This is a good
showing but we have reason to be­
lieve that the increase will greatly
exceed that figure in the next ten
years.
The last hard problem Senator
Lorimer has been up against since
being expelled from the U. S. Sen­
ate was a telephone pole. He was
severely shaken up and stunned
when his auto struck the pole
while going at a good speed.

twelvemonth I would telegraph
back to Hradstreet and Dun to
mark mv rating $125,000, and
then three twelvemonths later I
would wire them to make it from
half to three-quarters of a million.
If I had only my carfare, Bible,
dictionary and fountain pen, I
would send word to the old folks
to watch out for the Christmas
coming of the old home mortgage
lifter, and P would bet my pal dog,
for of course I’d have him along,
against a pouch of tobacco that
when Christmas came 1 wouldn’t
be makiug excuses for not coming

Argue Canal Bill
WASHINGTON, July 18.—
Railroad control of the Panama
canal, rights of American ships to
free tools and form of government
under which the canal manage­
ment is to be placed, were subjects
of directly opposing arguemeuts to­
day from Senators Brandegee, of
Connecticut and Townsend of
Michigan. Brandegee urged all
ships be admitted to the canal at
definite tool charge with no favors
to American vessels. If the rail­
road owned ships abused the priv­
ileges congress should then place
offending lines under jurisdiction
of the interstate commission.
Townsend urged legislation to pre­
vent railroads getting any grip on
the canal.

Seattle, July 18.—George H.
Parker, fiscal agent of the United
Wireless Telegraph Co., alleged in
the court proceedings to have clean­
ed up $1,515,(XX) by his operations,
and sentenced to two years in the
federal prison, has returned to his
fine home in Seattle, paroled from
the McNeil’s island penitentiary.
He is said to be worth several mil­
lion dollars.

eastern penitentiary.
