The Older of Elks have decided
to drop the "go a t” from all ttiniti-
atory work. The same thing has
been done by most lodges, and is
no doubt the right thing to do. We
have always regarded it is being
about ou a par with college haz­
ing, etc. It always destroys to a
degree the beauty aud solemnity
of ritualistic work of the order aud
often causes the candidate to think
too lightly of the obligations just
taken. In a community where
there are great numbers of young­
sters who are particularly foud of
that sort of thing a club may be
formed for the purpose, aud by
using a reasonable amount of com­
mon sense, a great deal of fun can
be had and no particular harm
done: esjiecially when the candi­
date understands what he is join­
ing aud the purpose for which he
goes in, but when one goes into
what he understands to be a great
beneficiary and fraternal organiza­
tion and the ceremony is complete­
ly knocked out of head with the
greatest bunch of foolishness he
ever bumped up against, it lets
the order down several notches in
his estimation.
In other columns in this issue
we give a resume of the bills to be
voted upon at our November elec­
tion. It has been estimated that
if the ballot is printed in the usual
form with a paragraph of explana­
tion with each item that the ticket
will he nine feet in length.
If
every voter would make a study of
each bill as be should, such long
explanations would lie unneces­
sary. In fact, if all he reads con­
cerning a measure is just what he
finds on the ballot, he is not com­
petent to vo‘ e intelligently, and it
would be safe for him not to vote
at all than take the chances of
voting against his own interests,

measure that the voters could in­
form themselves and when the
time conies be able to do their whole
duties and do it intelligently. One
of these measures is an amendment
to the effect that all measures voted
nu must receive a majority of all
votes cast. If this carries, not
voting upon a subject, not voting
on a certain measure will lie equal
to voting against it. This will
make it imperative that a large
vote be cast to get any measure
through.
Our attention has been called to
the manner in which gravel and
crushed rock are allowed to accum­
ulate upon the bitulithic pavement
of Main street, ft is generally re­
garded as being very .injurious to
street pavements of this kind to
be passed over by. vehicles on them.
It is not our purpose to be a kick­
er, but we have .too nice a street to
allow it to he spoiled by a little care­
lessness. We notice that teamsters
hauling gravel in Portland are
obliged to use wagon beds that
will not leak a partical of the
crushed rock, and a rew days ago
•«me of them were fined heavily
for allowing the running gears of
their wagons to carry a small quan­
tity onto the streets. It would be
a good idea to have all working
with gravel, etc., about
our
bitulithic streets to lie as careful
as possible.
To be convinced that the good-
roads' movement is a little behind
schedule time one has only to bring
up the subject with any of the
autoists who are passing through

worm as shown by the recent in­
vestigations made by the officers of
the U. S. Public Health and Ma­
rine Hospital Service in San Fran-
cisco.
