Each one of these has at least cue insect euemy which has killed trees in the past and is actually doing so to-day. ‘ Insect Damage to Standing Timber in the National Parks,” is the title of a paper read by an expert of the Bureau of Entomol ogy, U. S. Department of A gri culture, before the conference of national park superintendents held under the auspices of the Sec retary of the Interior on September 11-12, 1911, and issued as Circu lar 145 of the Bureau of Entomol ogy. In this circular a summary is given of the damage caused by a little group of “ tree-destroying” beetles, and of the practical meth ods of controlling them, resulting from the investigations of the Bur eau of Entomology. In a national forest where there was no evidence of destructive fires for the last 20 years it was found that the standing and fallen dead yellow pine that bad died within that period, and which had heretofore been considered as a natural and inevitable foiest con dition, represented in board feet nearly half as much timber as was then living. The sugar pine and Douglas fir represented 1-4 as much dead as was then living. Every dead tree examined in this estimate showed evidence that it had been killed by insects. An irreparable loss was caused from an aesthetic point of view in 1904 and ‘05 by the death, through the attack of the mountain pine beetle, of the three giant sugar pines on the trail from Wawona to ('»lacier Point and the Yosemite Valley. The veteran sugar pine known as "Uncle Tom ,” along the road entering the Park, was also killed by this beetle. The fact that it is plainly shown that this waste of natural resources can be prevented must interest not only the officials of our national and state parks and forests but ev ery owner of timber large and small. Governor West I There is a limit to every man’s capacity. What the limit is no one knows until it is reached. As a general rule men become great not so much for the reasou that they have better brains than other men, but because they can “ keep coming” . Can Governor West “ keep comiug?” It is this ques tion that makes him one of the most interesting figures on the Pacific coast today. * Knockers Cottage Grove has, we presume, a few people of the sort called "knockers.” If it has uot it is the only town of its kind in the United States. The 1 ‘knocker is a peculiar spe cies. Described briefly, he is a person who "ca n 't” , "w o n ’t” and "d o n ’t” . Progress must be made in spite of him. He is not without his value to a community, for the reason that a bit of opposition helps progress. But when he is in the majority he raises hob with progress. He makes progress look like a pale brown stick in a sea of dark green mud. However, it is always well to that all so called "knockers” are not. remember Give the "kn ocker" at least one respectful hearing. Does Cottage Grove get its full share of benefit from the county funds? I f not, why not? 8th Grade Exams Again Attributing the failure of about 30 per cent of the students taking the recent eighth grade examina tions to the fact that they had only been students in that grade about four months, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Alderman has announced that he did net in tend to make the list of examina tion questions any easier, save in spelling and civil government, but that he would hereafter insist that teachers of the eighth grade do uot permit students who have not been in it for seven months to take the examinations. He also stated that the blame for the questions in these two subjects beiug too difficult should not be placed at the door of the County School Superintendents, as they had not prepared the questions, but that he had asked teachers of the eighth grade to suggest ques tions for the grade examinations, and from those suggested he and his assistant had prepared the questions in the examination list. Possibly we may be mistaken in the matter, but we cannot believe that such results as followed the recent examination of eighth grade pupils can be due so much to any thing as to a wrong system. Such results could not be due to a shortcoming in the natural ability of the pupils. If such is the case the shortcoming is so nearly gen eral as to require other methods than those now in vogue. The standard of achievement is too high, the pace too swift. The av erage " k id ” benefits little from the greater portion of the schooling he receives, because he is not given time. He recites, perhaps with credit, but when examination comes he has forgotten. Lafferty, Congressman A. W. Lafferty has filed with the Secretary of State at Salem his declaration to be a can didate on the republican ticket for representative in congress from the 3rd district to succeed himself. He presents a good platform of work ing principles. But a good platform of working principles is uot sufficient in the case of Lafferty to make his can didacy agreeable to all the people of Oregon. The notoriety he at tained during the last session of the national legislature was uot of a sort to be easily forgotten or readily forgiven. W e wonder what the voters of the third district will do to him.
